Got myself a 5dmk2 with the sigma 24-70ex HSM lens the other day to replace my 40D. quality of the images are amazing and the lens is pretty sharp although the micro adjusment came in handy lol

downside to this new purchase is I've had to sell all my other gear so down to one lens frown

20-30mb raw files are going to soak up my memory though. I've not had a chance to properly play with the camera yet only snap shots.

iso 1600

iso 6400

Canon's 24-70L can't cope with the 1Ds 3's sensor. How's the Sigma version for vignetting, softness and CA towards the corners at 24mm?

vignetting pretty bad but its an easy fix in raw, not noticed any CA but not shot anything that would make me get any just yet.

Why, would it make their purchases any less valid?

Plus the sigma will likely run rings round a 50/1.8 anyway.

I like the vignetting, might make a change for me not to artificially add it!

sneaks off to look at current prices for D700s

a few 5D MkII shots from the last few days

Canon 100-400mm for the first few at the Gator Nationals NHRA Drag Racing, my seat was 25 rows back in the stands.

used the auto setting for this one.

Tv setting for this one.

Canon 17-40mm for these ones and auto mode.

a load more shots over on the Corvette Forum under the Amelia Island thread if you are interested.

Sorry to be rude, but it's a crime to use such a camera in the 'auto' modes. Have you tried the manual modes?

Surely its up to him how he uses his camera?

Stop being such a snob.

Why? scratchchin

I know I don't use a Canon, but I am in auto 85%-plus of the time (A almost exclusively), 100% if using a Speedlight. Strikes me that manual metering on shots like these, whilst wonderful if you have the time to do it, would be a huge luxury.

rex and I have had ours since before Christmas and absolutely love them. Not found any major problems with the Canon 24-70 2.8 L with it yet though.

We have shot commercial shoots with them and they are a godsend.

The Auto-ISO is the best feature so far (I know Nikon have had it for a while). We shot a school prospectus and I spent the whole day shooting kids at the school in Av/Tv with the camera in AutoISO (100-3200) and never had to use a flash which made us much less intrusive and also meant we could get some stunning natural light shots. See the auto-slideshow of shots on the homepage here: http://www.stcolettes.com/index.php

Last weekend I used it to shoot a hockey match, again with Auto ISO (see http://www.matabooboo.com password 'hockey') What it meant was that I could shoot in Tv with the ISO moving around as I needed automagically - love it. Also I was using the 70-200 2.8 L IS with a 2x converter, making it a 140-400 5.6 L IS (sold my 100-400 as this is a good compromise) and the focusing was lightning fast and spot on, even through a 5.6 lens (I am used to the 20D). Most importantly it meant I could do some creative cropping and still have lots of pixels left...

Then on Sunday I shot some 'snaps' of my kids with it and was very happy with it. The colours and contrast seem streets ahead of the 20D...

Because you could get the same result with a camera the fraction of the price.

Don't be a pillock - there's nothing snobbish about asking why he's using auto modes. If he hasn't done so already, he'll get a LOT more enjoyment out of the camera by getting onto the manual modes, and he'll get a lot better results in the long term.

If he's bought the camera solely to use it on the auto modes, then c'est la vie...
