I managed to tame a Robin a few months back.. now the little beggar comes in the kitchen everyday!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUVSb32w7a8&fea...

He gets through a few hundred mealworms a week!

If I go into the garden he flies onto my shoulder waiting for food!

Where does he put them all. Is he feeding a family?

Not yet I don't think.. He has a mate that is not so tame but just sits in a bush near by..

I can go out to the bush and put some mealworms next to it and his mate will feed on them.. I have put up a few nesting boxes so I hope they will take to one of them?

I can't believe a little wild bird could be so tame though? You can feel his little claws on your hand when he feeds, It's really strange..

I read something once that I'm sure is a myth. They have lived side by side with humans for so long they follow us out of instinct for food, quite how that happens as 99% of the population ignores them is beyond me.

Anyhow that is very, very cool. Enjoy it.

Thats fantastic

I have one that visits my garden but the starlings scare it away if I leave food out. They just swoop down and eat everything in seconds

Robin's are amazing little creatures! No fear at all, and like you see with a little coaching they are quite happy in close contact with humans.

There's been a segment on the radio here dedicated to them each day.

There are some do's and don'ts!

Chances are they might have eggs already.
They don't incubate the eggs untill they have a full clutch (usually 4 eggs) so that all the eggs hatch at close to the same time.
If you are seeing the same bird each time it is likely the male, who will also be feeding his mate.
When the chicks fledge, the parents will deposit them around the garden, what ever you do, don't interefere, the parents will carry on feeding and caring for the chicks.

Regarding feed, make sure the meal worms (perfect food for them) are free range! Seriously, some have preservatives added to them and it's thought that the chemicals can affect the chicks and adults.

Also, if you put up bird boxes, try to ensure they face north or are well shaded, south facing boxes get too hot as the summer approaches.

There are heaps of Robins round my garden at the moment - great stuff!

A bit of an update..

We have a mating pair now.. one is as tame as a pet cat! the other one is a little timid but she is coming around..

The male one feeds the female.. They get through around 500 mealworms every 2 weeks..

Turn the sound up you can hear the timid one singing in the bush!

A very dangerous comparison. Next thing you know, it will be taking a dump on your pillow because the mealworms aren't presented with due deference.

Those two links say this for me: The URL contained a malformed video ID.

We had one that kept coming in to our shed whilst we were on a lunch break. At first it would just stand at the door, but after a few days it would come right in!

What do you mean by a malformed video ID?

If Robins are so territorial, why are there so many in my garden?
