Been watching these on Nat Geographic, and i (normally) find them interesting..if a little sad.
Some really insignificant/obvious/silly mistakes that can bring an aircraft down. Hindsight is a wondeful thing. frown

Anyway, we're off to Florida this year, and i really don't want to be thinking of all the things that could go wrong when we're seconds from take off!
So i've stopped watching them.

Irrational?

Make sure you check the rivets for any hairline fractures.

Check weather

Check comms

Check all wiriing

Check the log book of the aircraft too see its past maintenance history

You will be fine if these are all top notch biggrin

Is that the mid air collision one? They advertise this as brand new but, i'm convinced i've seen it already??

Maybe my overactive 'i'm going to die' brain imagined it. frown

That was amazing. Incredible the forces involved with sudden rapid decompression!!

I think you're mistaking the collision between the private jet and passenger flight.

Yeah i'm sure it was a mid-air collision one advertised.
I have seen a mid-air one previously, Think it was a Cargo plane collided with a passenger jet.
Hopefully its not another repeat.

The one where the pilot gave his young son a shot in the cock pit whilst the plane was in auto pilot then it went in to a roll and crashed cos he pressed the throttle and in turn disengaged auto pilot was a a good un too, doesn't beat the one mentioned above though, where pilot that got sucked out and held on!!

I think i remember that one? The private jets left wing sliced through the passenger jet.
I also remember one when a Russian cargo plane had a head on with a 747. It looks like the one they now advertise as brand new.
Maybe it is a new one?

Check the pilot,he'll be the weakest link...

And when you get onto the departure lounge, have a look out of the window and make sure the bugger has a tax disc.

There are a few different shows along a similar theme. There is Air Crash Investigations, Seconds From Disaster, Situation Critical etc and a lot of them have covered the same incidents. I find them all quite interesting.

Me too..yes But i'm suddenly very aware of my own mortality. There is such a thing as 'to much information'

I realize i'm more likely to be struck by lightening whilst sitting on the toilet, but it doesn't make me feel any better. frown

I think it's age related, as i've got older (37 now) i've become more & more cautious. Stupid really.

Unless both gyros fail showing a gentle bank whilst on instruments. The pilot tried to get it back to level - shortly long afterwards it was heading straight down irrecoverably at 500+ mph.

I enjoy ACI, it does sometimes make you a bit hesitant to go on aircraft if you let it, but you got to remember the facts (i.e. more likely to die in your car..)

I think it's more the fear of smashing into the ground / water at hundreds of MPH though.

wasn't there one where they could no longer control the planes elevation and they tried everything, even flying upside down to try and get it to descend ? Scary stuff.

however many you watch though, you still have a far far greater chance of dieing from the food on board than from the plane crashing. So if you are going to be nervous, then at least st yourself looking at the food you're eating rather than getting spooked at how flexy the wing looks through the window. Funny thing is, dieing from food poisining would also be probaly be a thousand times more painful than dieing in a plane crash. When your aorta gets severed at about 10,000G and your brain gets crushed to a pulp against a mangle of fueslelage and aircraft seats, you tend not to know about it.
