I can't tell you what you're doing wrong, but I'd recommend you get a card reader rather than using a USB cable to the camera. It's a quicker way of transferring the files (and RAW files are big), and doesn't make any demand on the actual camera.
Have you tried setting it to just take RAW to see what happens then?

Probably a daft suggestion, but are you sure they're both jpegs ?
Open them both up in PS or elements and see if adobe camera raw kicks in with either of them.
Obviously if the file name is .jpeg for both, then I'm a numpty, but for some reason, my laptop shows thumbnails of raw files and sometimes it doesn't.

A plug-in for Windows Explorer that allows the display of thumbnails for CAnon RAW files is available from the Canon web-site.Open them both up in PS or elements and see if adobe camera raw kicks in with either of them.

Is that what's on the CF card or does it only become a JPEG once it's transferred to your hard disk?image.JPG

So... it's a windows thing?

Not sure. My initial thought, as per my earlier post, is that if you are using software to do the transfer that it's set to convert to JPEG automatically. The fact that if you shoot raw only you don't get the same problem probably rules out that theory though. I'm afraid I don't have any other ideas. At least you know the camera is actually recording the raw files.image.JPG
