I am looking at getting a new car, but the one i am looking at has high road tax(mazda RX8) but looking on the parkers web site they state that if i get one registered upto the 24 march 2006 i will not be paying £400 per year but £220.
is this correct as most other sites dont mention this
thanks in advance

400 quid - I think you might get one year grace due to its age, but it's 400 notes thereafter.

As I understand it, up to the end of March 06, Band F is the highest and thus cheaper tax. Happy to be corrected tho.

Same as what I'm doing - get a pre 06 and you will have a fast car that handles great, fully loaded and with cheapish road tax! (£220)

Hang on a second guys, but doesnt the new tax band cover all cars from 2001 onwards? If thats the case then its going to cost you around £400 per year.

I know £400 is a lot to pay for what is in reality little return, but the difference between a £400 and a £220 tax bill is less than £3.50 a week. That isn't enough of a difference to make me alter my car buying habits. it is only just over half a gallon of fuel.

I have just renewed the car tax for my March 2006 Porsche Carrera, which cost me £210. I assume the RX-8 would be the same.

If you follow the tax band link, then it gives you the info for road tax and company tax, and as far as i could see, all rx8's are going to be 400 or above purely down to the amount of co2 they produce! If you want one, and can afford one, then go ahead, but thats a bit rich for me!

Having re-read it, yes, if you buy an early 192ps rx8, then it will be less than 400 a year, but come on, most people on here would want the higher power one! getmecoat

this help?

The important bit being '* Band K includes cars that have a CO2 figure over 225g/km but were registered before 23 March 2006. These cars will stay in band K'

Do you chaps think pre 2006 cars with high emissions will stay in Band K forever?

Or only until 2010/2011? (i.e. from 2011 will they be £400+)?

Doesn't seem clear to me, guess they (or a new Gov) could change the wording/their minds etc by then anyhow...

FYI Nope, it's now 2018 and the deal is the same. There would never be much point raising tax on a minority of vehicles (i.e those over 10 years etc) anyway. Mine was registered in January 2006 so just scraped in. As most RX8's aren't daily's now the Tax is very relevant...
If paying by DD it is currently £27.50/ month instead of £46.00. For an occasional use car that is only really used in the summer that's a huge difference!
