How to get 'high contrast' type shots?

This is either an awesome photo, or (more likely) has been played about with in PS.
What do I need to do (either in cam or in PS) to achieve this result?

That's been tweaked in a photo editing program. Looks like a bit of contrast, some extra saturation and a definite nudge on the sharpening.
