Bit of a shame that. Don't really think he would have won the title anyway, but I would imagine a lot of people who are going down to spectate are a little pissed off

Autosport carry the story as well
www.autosport.com/newsitem.asp?id=25183&s=8

Have also read that Richard fainted at the wheel whilst driving on the motorway....markko martin was his passenger and managed to steer the car to safety.
(though this story has not been confirmed yet)
If true...jolly lucky that no harm came to either of them.

Which I'll quote

RICHARD BURNS can thank a rally rival for saving his life after he blacked out behind the wheel of his Porsche 911 Turbo on a motorway.

The dramatic incident happened as Peugeot ace Burns was driving down the M4 towards Cardiff to start preparations for this weekend’s Rally GB.

He was in the outside lane when he suddenly fainted — but, fortunately, Ford flier Markko Martin was in the passenger seat and the Estonian reacted quickly to steer the sports car onto the hard shoulder.

Burns regained consciousness only to faint for a SECOND time and Martin immediately called an ambulance.

He was taken to Newport hospital where he yesterday underwent tests — including a brain scan.

Burns, 32, had complained about feeling unwell after a huge crash during testing in Scotland three weeks ago and then having another accident in the Catalunya Rally seven days later.

FIA officials reacted to the motorway drama by pulling Burns out of the season’s final showdown — wrecking his slim chances of becoming the first British driver to regain his world crown.

Reluctant hero Martin would only say: “It was lucky for Richard that I was with him.”

Truly gutting. What a way to have all your hard work undone by something out of your control.

I bet he doesn't feel like it right now, but at least he came to no serious harm. Fingers crossed it's noth8ng serious and he makes a full recovery. Burns has never been my favourite WRC driver, but never-the-less you've got to feel for the guy.

yeah, I'm wondering the same, or at least in reverse...

Shame for the guy, but at least Martin was beside him! Well, least someone was beside him, it reads as if Martin was the only person who could have saved him...

Interesting point - would subaru want burns if they can't find out why he fainted/reasonably guarantee it won't happen again during next season?
