Am on the verge of getting on to removing the manifolds to get the precats out. There is no issues with them, purley would like it cooler under the bonnet.
It occured to me today, what if they have already been taken out by a previous owner. The bloke I bought the car off off was totally un mechanical and had no clue. So my question is there a way to tell?
I tried tapping the pipes in the hope of a change in pitch where they are situated. And in all fairness it does change pitch slightly. But dont think this a reliable way to do it. Any thoughts peeps?

Take the Y piece off (which you would have to do anyway when you go to take the precats out) and it will be immediately obvious.

Why would I need to remove the Y piece?

Hmm, was under impression you just unbolt them, undo the clamp onto the Y piece and hey presto!!

Whadya mean? You can't do or see anything with the Y piece fitted.

With the Y piece off you can see whether you have precats fitted, and you need to take it off anyway when you actually remove the precats. You can get away with leaving the manifolds on the engine (ideally you'd take them off but it's a pig of a job) as long as you clean the manifolds out carefully before you refit the Y piece. Otherwise all the debris will be blown into the cat and block it.

Right I'm with you now. I got a tad confused as I didn't realise you could remove them this way. But technically I can remove the manifolds without removing the Y piece yes?
Think I'd prefer to remove them with the manifolfds on the bench really. I'm young, have small hands and a decent selection of tools, sure it can't be that bad(famous last words)

Plan will be to get Y piece out and have a looksee me thinks.
Thanks

I would never take the manifolds off just to remove the precats, unless you knew the precats were blocked or causing trouble (loose, breaking up, blocking the main cat etc). Sooner or later you *will* need to remove one of the manifolds to replace a gasket or fix some other problem. It is an absolute pig of a job, with lots of opportunities for snapped/stripped bolts that can be a real problem to sort out, and I suggest you leave them the hell alone until you absolutely have to take them off. Then take the opportunity to take the pre-cats out, paint them, or whatever else you want to do.

It is possible (but difficult) to remove the precats with the manifolds in place, and if you were determined to take the precats out that's the way I'd recommend doing it. But there's no particular benefit to taking the precats out unless they are blocked or falling apart and causing trouble.

Zippy, I asked the same question on here a few weeks ago (on Chimaera forum). Spend replied

'IR thermometer is the easy way to tell, the cats (precats) in the wide round part just after the 4-1 get much hotter'

I don't know if this will help but I have just had the pre-cats and the main cat taken out (well de-cat Y piece put in place).

Temperatures using IR thermometer: -
Before
NS pre cat area = 280c
OS pre cat area = 290c
Main cat area = 195c

After
NS pre cat area = 240c
OS pre cat area = 220c
Main cat area = 90c

If GreenV8S says it's a pig of a job, I believe him.
