I had a Pentax Optio S12 for Chrimbo, hadn't used it at night until a couple of weeks ago, at which point i noticed 9 stuck pixels. Seeing as the screen is tiny-is this acceptable? I took it back to Comet and wifey picked it up today. Unsurprisingly it's the same-she didn't get any paper work but i've emailed them to find out what's what. I'm guessing it is acceptable as far as Pentax are concerned?

What's a "stuck pixel"? Like a dead pixel? On the display or sensor? You'll never get a perfect version of either - there's a tolerance on sensors and displays that allows for a few dead pixels to increase the yield. If it's really bad though you might have some comeback.

stuck-as in always on, some are geen, most are white. So on a night shot you see lots of light even if it's pitch black. I've got s 32" LCD with ZERO faults, mobile phones with ZERO faults, laptop.. zero faults. Seems piss poor for such a small screen to have so many faults??

I know exactly what you mean. I've never had a single faulty pixel on any screen I've ever had, be it monitor, laptop, phones, cameras or whatever, so it always surprises me that they're allowed what seem to be quite large numbers of dead pixels under "normal" conditions, which mean they can weasel out of the warranty.

But as I said is this the sensor or the display? If it's the sensor, it happens. Usually a long exposure Noise reduction will get rid of it (does an identical length exposure with the shutter closed, and subtracts from the "light" image to remove the dead pixels). If it's on the display (ie doesn't show on the image), then don't worry about it.

It's the screen, easy to say don't worry about it but when taking night shots all you can see is stuck on pixels! I've had an email back from Comet saying return it to the store.

Ah, in my haste I'd assumed we were talking five or six dead pixels (out of 250,000 or so), hence the comment about manufacturing tolerance and yield. If it's more than that and obsuring what you're taking then hope you can get it sorted soon. Sorry about that! They in lines or have any patern to them at all? (if so maybe one of the address lines to the display is dead/has a dodgy connection).

It's back with them, IIRC i counted 12 on the screen. I'm guessing as i can see them easily they are infact groups of actual pixels(as you say there are thousands on a small scren). No doubt it will come back same again at which point i will ask for the manager, not like they will test it @ night!!

Oh dear, they rang yesterday to say it was ready,"what was done to it?" i asked, "err not sure" came the reply, i'll find out & call you back.....

"i'm sorry, it hasn't come back at all, it hasn't been sent away yet".

Smart. I wonder if it sat there for two weeks last time.

If ever there was a "give me back my money" moment, that's surely it!
