Hello everyone...

Had my S3 serviced and MOT'd today, whilst undertaking the service I asked the nice garage man to eliminate a little misfire at tick over. I thought it might be a chaffed plug lead but it wasn't it was a cracked plug... anyways in the course of the diagnosis they put it on the rolling road to set up fuel injection at various rev bands.. now I presume these rolling road tests are fairly accurate because the BHP came out at 157 at 5000rpm.... scratchchin does that ring true to you chaps... if so not bad for a 17 year old engine with 93300 miles on the clock.

I would have said that was a respectable figure.

Not that I would want to do a 100% dyno test on a 17 year old engine yikes

I think that might be a bit low!! Weren't they supposed to have 170bhp when new ? Before i got my S3c the previous owner had it rolling roaded at 169bhp and when I got it I found that it was with the wrong plug gaps, wrong ignition timing and not ever getting full throttle due to the way the throttle cable was adjusted, when properly set up these 2.9 V6 engines can give very good power figures, I think there are several owners on here who have found some amazing figures from a standard engine just by setting it up properly!!!
Cheers.....Tony..

I wouldn't get too hung up about it - there can be significant variations between rolling roads - whats more useful if you are doing mods to the car is whether the power goes up or down as a relative value.

It could be worth asking if the RR has had any kind of calibration.

My engine has done 104k and pulls like a train. No engine mods at all. Still another 100k miles left easy! Must say 158bhp at 5000 rpm is very impressive.

According to my calculations (probably not true in the slightest) your peak power at 6000 rpm would be 189bhp. I'll get my coat... getmecoat

Your calculations are correct if the torque is the same at both speeds...
sadly, it won't be as high at 6000rpm as at 5000rpm.

Thanks chaps for your interesting comments.. I never requested a rolling road test they just did it. The garage owner said it was the best way to gauge the fuel metering at different rev bands... leastways thats what I think he said... being a bit of a numpty in these matters i took him at his word.

Anyways.. when I drove it home it ran smooth and responsive.. should be good for the next owner because I want to sell it this spring.

With a bit of luck I hope to be on the Porsche forums next year. yes

Paul.

You are right, that's the vital piece of the puzzle. About 170peak bhp. Clumbs these engines are strong!

smile ...My S3 is the first open topped two seater I've ever owned and I must say over the 4 years of ownership it's been great fun.. but.. lets face it... it has its drawbacks..it let me count them..

1. The clicky clicky from the starter solenoid instead of bursting into life..always meant it had to be parked on an incline.. the uncertainty was fun I suppose.

2. The turning circle of a small aircraft carrier.

3. The heavy steering although that got better with new u/js and a refurbed rack.

4. The rattly roof struts although that went away with my ally ebay jobbies.

5. Drivers lecky window which needed to be helped up by hand although the new wiring connectors improved that.

6. The headlights making the road darker...

7. Drivers door mirror being a complete tt to tighten although I got round that with my own 6mm bolt/grub screw codge.

blimey the list could go.. compared to my neighbours Mazda mx5 who never ever rolled his sleeves up
my TVR only confirmed his belief that TVR cars are rubbish.. mind you he is an Hairdresser.

Having said all this I would love to keep it.. getting rid of the missus is not an option she bankrolls the whole shooting match which frees up my dosh to dabble in these toys. wink

Paul.

Hello Mat..

I went to Hitech on the Lodge Forge Ind. Est at Cradley Heath.
Mick the proprieter is a chatty sort of bloke and most helpful went it comes Porsche 911s circa late eighties.

I had heard from others that his rolling road was generous with its output figures but who cares ..

So you woz in a 928 eh... can i have a go of it wink

I have got the sanction from her indoors... all i need to do is sell my S.. I hope the fact that the outriggers have been replaced clinches me a deal.. so we'll see

Lets hook up one night and burn some rubber.. smile

Paul.

PS Please forgive me but a Boxster could be a contender.. these Porches aren't cheap y'know.. smile

Club autosport (also in cradley) are well worth talkiing to if you fancy going down the porsche route.

Drop me a Mail and we can sort something out.
