.avi on to a cd??

I have some films on my computer that i'd like to burn on to cd. Only problem is they're bigger than my 700mb cd; so i need a file-splitter. They need to be in video cd as well. Please could someone recommend a suitable program for this and any instructions. I also need a program to burn the films on to cd with, just to make that clear.

use 80min cd and over burn them will get most movies on them.

look at www.vcdhelp.com under editors and tools for spliter ie virtal dub should do the trick
as for a program to bun em on disk exactly what do you mean?

do youy want em to auto start is that what you mean ?

Sorry for the late reply. I don't think i'll get 80 min CDs because i'd have to buy them when i get 74 minute CDs for free. What i meant was that i needed a program that ideally did the file-splitting for me and burnt it on to the CD. I have nero 5.5 and i also have NTI CD maker platinum 6. I was just wondering if there was anything better to use. I'll have a go tonight because i'm not near my home computer at the moment.

VirtualDUB or the similar NanDUB is probably the best thing you'll need for splitting AVI's. It's also free, just download a version from the Internetwebsuperhighwaythingy.

And you can't really go wrong with Nero either.

Just out of interest how long does it take to encode a .avi into mpeg. The reason i ask is that i've tried it before on my computer and i just get really impatient with it and stop. Would you say an hour and 40 minutes is reasonable, i have no idea how long these things would take.

Depends what PC really. My PIII800 with half a gig of memory takes about an hour to do a 30 minute mpeg to WMV.

It also depends on the bit rate and resolution of the input data, the rate and resolution of the output, the output format (MPEG2, MPEG4, QT, WMV, DiVX, XviD etc..) and the software you are using to do the conversion.

The problem with avi files is that they are huge - 23 seconds of avi at only 320x240 is about 130mb, but compressed in mpeg format it's only about 5mb. You really need somesort of conversion software. You could go the whole hog and get some video editting software to both edit and compress. WinXP Home has Windows Movie Maker built in which will produce wmv format files - nice and small but not such good quality. For a very good, and free, avi to mpeg converter try TMPG - it's available free at www.tmpgenc.net/e_main.html - look under downloads.

Thanks for the reply, i'm going to have a go later on in the week, probably the week-end. I have TMPEGenc but haven't had the patience to encode a whole film. I have a website with some good instructions for it. So thanks for the link.

My next problem is i have a film in divx format. It won't work with TMPEGenc and i understand that i have to encode the picture and the audio separately. Which sounds really complicated.

I'd appreciate any advice for programs to use for the divx.

If you use TMPGenc you'll have to open the video in VirtualDUB to syncronise the audio and video playback 9 times out of 10.

VirtualDUB on it's own will compress to the same levels if you adjust the DivX settings or whichever compression algorithm you want to use.

Question though, why VCD? The quality is really crap. DVD writers are very cheap at the moment (£99) and the quality of playback will be much better and it will play on any DVD player.

I get CDs for free. I've looked into DVD writers, but i don't think i can account for the cost of the drive and the discs, as i'm not going to be a really heavy user. Also most films are under 1gb on the internet, so it would be a waste of about 3gb on the DVD-r.

But out of interest if i did have a DVD drive what would the process for burning .avi be. Would it be a lot easier?

I would never advocate messing around with films downloaded off the net, unless they're tacky Hollywood films made by people with more money than sense

Anyway a 1GB AVI in DivX encryptment would need to be converted to MPEG-2 format which will increase it's size to between 2-3GB.

You would then convert this MPEG-2 file to the VOB file format and burn to DVD.
