Guys still toying with what engine to go for etc.

But after scanning the internet, other than price everyone is raving about this LS9 motor, which is available from paceperformance.

Any thoughts?

Good engine, smaller displacement and valves then an ls7 which can also be force fed. Do you get a plug and play ecu with an ls9 crate, if not you have to map it yourself and forget about any warranty if it's not in a vette. if there is an ecu with it for retro installs then that would be great.

Has anybody seen a price for LS 9 in UK? It doesn't appear on GMperformanceparts yet.

Is it possible to modify it to get the inlet to the rear?

Parts World Performance in UK say that they expect to have a price and delivery very soon.

Their unofficial guesstimate of the price is about £14,000. That's one feck of a good price if it works out in that area.

That does sound good, ill be interested, however ive just recieved info from Jeff Schwartz re the LS7 package he supplies and to be fair its not bad, especially if the pound gets a bit of strength back.

I fairly certain the ls9 has a different flywheel bolt pattern to earlier engines. Bell housing pattern will be the same. As for price I reckon it'll be dearer then the figures being suggested by the time it's for sale here. I'd guess at approaching £18k including vat. Did anybody establish if there's an ecu included?

£14k... ??? £18k... ???

Madness... utter madness!

My 2007 RS4 drive-train only cost £5k all-in. That's the cost to buy the engine and 6-speed audi gearbox, modify the heads / exhaust ports, fit independent throttle bodies, re-wire (with new ECU), re-plumb and fabricate exhaust / mounts.

8250rpm and 420bhp in a 175kg V8 package... ! Okay, so I'm not going to win any bragging contests down the pub, but am I honestly going to be that far behind you in your £18k engine... I think not!

Well you're probably going to be down 200 hundred horsepower for a start and maybe a huge amount of torque. Plus the vette has very lightweight internals. I reckon you'll be some way behindsmile

Absolutely no idea... won't be cheap!

Not having a pop at the Chevy engine... if it's worth X-grand, then its worth X-grand. What I find crazy is that there are (apparently lots of) people out there willing to spend that amount on an engine eek

I often rolled my eyes when I read quotes saying that the average Ultima build is £50k-70k... I can see why now if that's what some of you are shelling out for a motor!

PS - I hope if anyone is seriously thinking of spending that kind of money on a new LS engine, then they'll be complimenting it with a bespoke box and not just throwing on a G50!

^ I know what you mean about budgets. Coming from a background with rovers it's amazing what some people can spend on their cars but I guess it's only a reflection of how much they earn or have available to spend. The fun factor doesn't change be it an expensive car or tuned 2cv if ever there was such a thing.

yep its a huge waste of money imo as well!! You will also need to upgrade your trannie and associated parts so that will also heavily increase the costs. I also dont think light internals are that important

Hi Scotty, some may have the abilities to machine all the bits that are necessary to take a junk yard engine and make it work in an ultima. I for my part would have to pay for all of this including making a custom exhaust, custom ECU programming, custom bell housing, and and and and.
That all sum up would cost a lot more than buying a chevy ls engine where all parts are more or less standarized and therefore reasonable priced. I am pretty sure if you guys with RS4 and whatever other engines count together time and money you spent on it it will sum up to the same or more if you go the LS route.
I however envy the guys that are installing a V10 or similar but for me no option.

The main reason I bought the RS4 was because of it's price to performance ratio)! When I bought it, folk were still wary of the FSi and all the Audi cars were still under manufacturers warranty, so there was no market for them.

However, the price I quoted was for all the engine work 'contracted-out'. I don't have the time to do it as I'm working on another car right now, so I just project-managed the engine development.

Providing you have a clear idea of what you want to achieve, then re-cycling a modern engine to suit your needs is really not that hard and can be very cost-effective.

It's allowed me to have a fairly competitive engine and still have funds left to upgrade other areas.

my dream for an ultima would have been a cayenne turbo engine, there are factory version with 530hp and it is a quite compact size of motor
they are going for a similar prize as the RS4 and do not have the direct injection feature. no idea for the ECU as this engine is using variocam, which is
an adjustment of the cam and I have no idea if you can find an aftermarket ecu that will support this feature.

Try the usual suspects... Omex, DTA, etc. there's not a great deal they can't do (other than FSi biggrin).
