Recetly bought Audi 98 A6 1.8T SE and noticed that it taks alot of motor oil, however there is no smoke.. and car just passed MOT streight away..

there are signs of motor oil leak from bottom engine and near turboo
..

one mechanic said that it is beacuase of turbo as turbo drain is throwing motor oil as it should not drain motor oil from turbo... he said that fauly turbo is putting pressure that is making some oil leak and consumption of oil..

what the best way to solve this problem.

thanks

Hi there, I've just had exactly this problem with a good friends MkIV Golf GTi 1.8 Turbo. She was running it on Mobil1 0W40 fully synthetic (Very thin oil) and it was using huge amounts of oil, needing a top-up every 2-3 weeks. There were no leaks at all, no smoke and no loss of performance. At the last service we changed to a thicker 10W40 semi-synthetic oil and after 1000 miles, the level was still on max. She now uses a good quality 10W40, and the oil consumption is no worse than normal! Just a thought!

sounds intresting, I have also realised that some times it seems to last longer and some times it disappears quickly. I am going to try semi synthatic oil trick.. will post back results
