Hi,
I came up behing an R8 yesterday and was supprised to find that i was able to keep up... I was expecting the r8 to pull away due to its supposedly superior 0-60 time. At the speed we were going above 60mph i was able to keep up with ease... its the M3 really that good, or was the r8 just poorly driven?
I suspect that the extra power at the top of the rev range and the ability to go to near 9000 rpm (therefore fewer gear changes) puts it on level par...
Thoughts?

Unless you are a very good driver on a circuit or very brave on a public road, few cars will get away from an M3. A bike maybe but the R8 although a wonderful car does not have enough grunt to really pull away through twists and turns nor along a dual carriageway over a mile or two.

If it was the V8 car then they aren't significantly faster in a straight line than the E92 M3

Err for one the R8 does not have a V10 (except for the new one which i not yet available for sale), two he was after a race, and three everyone knows M3 drivers have huge balls.

The R8 isn't that quick and like the B7 RS4 will be some way off the numbers Audi claims for BHP. Still rather have the R8 though but when you are looking at such small differences in BHP/Performance numbers I would expect nothing else.

Maybe he was a little more mature & values his driving licence more than you do. Not everybody has something to prove. The V10 would have blown you into the weeds had he wished or been capable enough. Be sensible, he probably thought (as I do all the while), "Why is that idiot behind tailgating me?". I generally let the guy by or if he is really P*****G me off I accelerate hard then just dab the brake lights on a couple of times. - That generally frightens them enough to drop back. The driver was just enjoying his car - as you probably do - with no need to display how big his "p***k" is........
If thats you view why are you in this website, entitled "Speed Matters"...???? Miserable bstard. I never said we went over 70mph.

I have both,R8 is mine and M3 is my wifes the R8 is no quicker but stick some bends in and the R8 is much better.

The R8 is fast but not supercar fast. well not the V8 but now that theres the V10.
I still think its one of the best all round sports cars you can buy.

I found this the other day whilst in my z3 m roadster......
Different car but i was pushing a golf r32 along with absolute ease & wasnt using full throttle at all but something told me, he was!

I am absolutely amazed at how quick these cars really are & they do not get enough credit/respect that they should in my opinion.

R8 is 4x4. 0-60 advantage partially down to that. Once both cars are rolling then there would be little in it until the R8 Aero advantage takes over at higher speeds.

The M3 and R8 aren't miles apart on power to weight ratio

Didn't Top Gear or someone test the R8 versus the RS6 and discover the latter was actually quicker in a straight line?

The R8 is undoubtably a quick car but not surprised if it is no quicker than the E92 M3. I suspect the V10 will change that slightly...
