Hey folks. Can anyone suggest some decent roads to have a pan about on, not too far out form the Burgh. Only ones I can think of are A701\702. Any other suggestions appreciated!

Edinburgh - A701/A703 To Peebles. Over to Traquair. Down Past St Marys Loch and the Grey Mares Tail (A708). Then either back via the Meggat Water/Talla reservoir or continue down to Moffat and back via the Devils Beeftub (A701) ?

Don't forget as stop at The Gordon Arms or The Tibbie Shiels Inn.

East Lothian, head down to North Berwick and back via Haddington/Gifford etc

You'll need to look up the road numbers (mostly B's) as I've no idea.

Some nice roads out behind Temple kina way. Also head down the carlops road then take a right towards Tarbrax, some nice stuff around there.

Just another thought. A702 closed for the next few days at Hillend. Diversion is via the A703 Penicuik rejoining A702 between Silverburn and Ninemileburn. Extra traffic through Penicuik is a right pain at the moment.

Mine is Balerno to Carnwath on the Lanark road (A70?), then Carnwath to Biggar then across to Peebles.

Stop at Peebles for a Lasagne pie at Forsyth's the bakers. yum

Then back up to Edinburgh, hang a right at the old Leadburn inn. Watch out for Pheasants though!

A great cross section of roads, mostly well sighted too. thumbup

thumbup On a dry day, one of the best, and not a Gatso in sight. Watch out for sudden bends with uneven camber or you'll find your self in a ditch with a bemused sheep. hehe
hehe

It's a great collection of roads, it's my reference road for anything even remotely tasty i've got my hands on.

The great thing is you can see ahead for miles to spot oncoming traffic and sheep.

Pheasants are another thing to watch out for, especially around Biggar.

The added bonus of a pie at Forsyth's make it the top roads for me. biggrin

A slightly late reply, but I searched for good roads around Edinburgh this morning, and this PH thread came up. Pottered around the route above and it was lovely, thanks for the recommendation smile

Great route - A198 coast road (which you can either join from the A1 signposted North Berwick) or go through Musselburgh. Stop at North Berwick for a fish supper/ice cream (best town in Scotland but as the local Councillor I may be biased), then head back past Dirleton and take the B1345 over to Drem then the A6137 to Haddington.
