A mate of mine tells me how his missus drives a Kia Sorento, a great car with a Mercedes diesel engine. Anyhow, for a few years she had continual problems with the fuel filter failing, until she changed from Asda diesel to a branded diesel. My mate believes that Asda use (quite legally I presume) a high content of methanol in their diesel fuel, and that this is what causes the filter to fail (seals presumably).

Is there any truth in this?

I can say that the Sorento doesn't use a Merc engine but actually a Kia designed one. There was an issue with fuel filters on them mostly sorted under warranty. Not sure about the diesel from ASDA. Good angle.

Bought a tank of diesel from ASDA a few months back and had no end of trouble with it missfiring at upper revs. It was from a new station that was built near us. Weird thing was that the missfire only happened when the tank was full - I repeated the test just to check what was going on.

I have just filled the car with a tank of Asda diesel and get home to read this banghead

Its the first i have used a full tank of it in the Corsa, so I'll see how it responds. Meanwhile, I'll be watching this thread to see if anyone can confirm the cause of the problem...though I am aware that a few cases should not write it off as bad fuel.

I thought it was a Mercedes engine, just one from the middle ages?

I ride a variety of fast and/or highly tuned bikes, and drive a Merc SL500 and a Merc C220CDi.

All of these run absolutely fine on supermarket fuel (be it from Tesco/Asda/Morrissons). I really don't understand what these "supermarket fuels" threads are on about; fuel must be sold that meets BSxxxx and engines are designed to run on it. Supermarket fuel ought to be "fresher" too - they sell a lot more of it.

Nah mate. I used to work for a KIA franchise and asked the question to one of the head techy bods and he said it was designed in conjunction with Hyundai the sister company. KIA have been making engines for donkeys years many early ones in the 50's and 60's were made under license. Apparently the Sedona 2.9CRDI is a Chrysler Unit. I don't know though.
Ssangyong uses various 80's and 90's CDi units in their cars. I think that is where the confusion is. Maybe?

I'm not suggesting that any supermarket sells bad fuel, but I'm just wondering if anyone else has heard that Asda add methanol to their diesel, and if there is any truth to it, and also if it would cause any problems.

The first Mercedes CDi engines didn't really arrive until the turn of the century, they would likely have used older TD units.

Sorry your right although I think the later Rexton may use a CDi?

Most fuel comes from the nearest distribution point, and from the nearest refinery.

But Vopak/Greenergy/Harvest operate out of Thurrock (and somewhere up north) from where they distribute fuel from Europe.

They seem to supply Tescos, Morrisons, and Asda. Sainsburys used to be 'main-stream' but who know what deals have been done?

scratchchin Now this is interesting. Probably coincidental but has made me think. Before Christmas I had problems with my Astra diesel - I posted on here looking for advice and in the end took no further action because it did`nt really effect the running of the car. Anyhow, I could`nt tell you the last time I put diesel in from Asda up until last week when I put a full tank in. What happened this morning on the way to work? Fault reappeared and engine management warning light came on - first time it had happened in weeks and `000s of miles including moments when I thought to myself that the fault would happen.
I think I`m going to avoid Asda and see if the fault stops occuring.
