Couldn't sleep so I had a look through the window and got the Sigma 150-500 out for a play.

I also added my x2 converter for this shot, shot it in raw, played with the exposures making several new files and then processed it in Photomatix....

C&C welcome (I know it's a bit OE at the top!)

BTW - morning guys smile

Thanks thumbup

The original settings were

400d
ISO 100
1/60 f11
500mm (but with a x 2 so the camera is confused here!)

I then reduced the exposure byBit of unsharp marks for good measure and I also reduced the density of the black background to make it really dark....

Edited to add - it was taken on a tripod.

That's stunningly clear. I like it a lot - any chance you could post up a high-res version for use as a desktop?

Funk - Thanks.....I live in the sticks and have very little if no ambient light to worry about which makes life a bit easier wink

Click on either picture and it will take you to my own flickr page.

Along the top of the photo are a number of commands - click 'all sizes' and it will be seen at the resolution I posted at. Then click 'original' and it's there to save and download smile

Cheers - I'd assumed the use of a tripod. Think I might have to be borrowing my fathers big lens and sturdy tripod soon.

Considering that's taken through a foot of glass I think that's remarkable.

Question.....why remarkable confused
Because it looks a lot better than I would have expected from a long 5:1 zoom lens with a pair of binoculars strapped on smile

Lovely! thumbup
I took a shot with my 40D + 70-200F4, but it just wasn't long enough... frown
I'd love the Canon 100-400; which I'm sure 4hero took a stunning shot of the moon with... scratchchin

This was my effort last night. Taken with 70-200mm L-lens with 1.4x converter

Not as clear as the OPs' version but it is one I am happy with.

well done, I did a similar thing on 3rd March 2007 when we had a 'blood moon' eclipse

here is a series I knocked together

EOS 1Dsmk2 + 400DOF4 IS + 2x extender mk2 (hence F8)

As soon as the eclipse happens the ISO has to ramped up as you are effectively exposing of the dark sector of the moon surface
The little dot at 4 O'Clock I think is venus

Every time I try and take a moon photo it fails to be even remotely sharp even at high shutter speeds of 1/1000th or similar.

I sound like it's a problem with you.

Make sure the tripod is rock solid and, if you can with your camera, lock the mirror up before you take the pic as the moving mirror can introduce vibrations into the camera especially noticeable at longer focal lengths.

I have also tried to photogaph the moon and I got disappointed.
