Xbox 360 - Red Ring of Death after update - anyone else?

Can't find any recent threads on this. After installing the recent compulsory xbox 360 software update, my console is now buggered! I've got the red ring of death with three flashing quadrants.
My xbox is now out of it's warranty, but was working completely fine before the software update. Apparently Microsoft want over £50 to fix it.
Has anyone else had this problem and have you got MS to fix it for free? I don't feel I should have to pay for it's repair considering it's been damaged by a Microsoft compulsory software update. This is a widely reported problem with many people reporting their consoles have been damaged by the update.

£50 pfft. You could always buy a brand new arcade console, and stick your HDD in it.

MS consoles have a 3 year warranty, so unless its a launch console it should still be covered.

Actually, since the update, I've had a couple of overheats. I vacuumed the intake and exhaust, and figured that would be it, but just in case, I decided to try blowing air in using an electric airbed pump. It blew an incredible amount of dust out. Not had any overheating problems since.

mine went 2 weeks ago, and i saw the same thing on the microsoft web site ref £50.
but if you go through the whole proces they don't bill you.
they will onlu to it if you send a console back that isn't the ring of death.
had mine back 1 week later. and very impressed with whole service they did.
email from microsoft confirming order for repair.
then from UPS for picking up console from anywhere, and you can print the label so you dont have to fill anything in when guy turns up.
also tracking order.
must say was very pleased.

they will onlu to it if you send a console back that isn't the ring of death.
had mine back 1 week later. and very impressed with whole service they did.

https://service.xbox.com/servicehome.aspx?mkt=en-g...Sign in with your Live account, register the device, request a repair, get the email with the necessary paperwork, organise UPS (though in my case I took it into Mailboxes etc and got them to pack it up (they used an old knackered cardboard box)), wait a couple of days for it to get to Germany, wait a couple of days for MSFT to 'fix' it, wait a couple of days for UPS to deliver it back. One note of caution: if you want it delivered to a different address (for instance work) then this needs to be the address before you start the whole process. For some reason it isn't possible to change the delivery address after you've started the process - I guess you could argue the toss with UPS, but anyway...

I had exactly the same problem. I bought my Xbox 2ndhand from Gamestation and had it replaced twice under warranty. Gamestation took my broken one in part exchange for a new one. For £65 I got a brand new equivalent Xbox (Elite) with a 2 year warranty, bigger HDD and a copy of Tomb Raider (RRP £39). The new Xbox is quieter, has a lighter power supply and hopefully won't go pop the same way the last 3 did. And if it does it's now got a new warranty.
