DV files

I have a JVC DV camera that I've not used for nearly 2 years. I've totally forgotten how I previously saved files on to my PC via Firewire. Whatever I used previously scanned the tape and auromatically loaded each clip as a separate file. I've since changed my computer. Now when I plug it in via Firewire Windows Movie Maker pops up. I can grab DV-AVI files using that at 178Mb/minute, but it lumps them all together as a single file. My older files are around 210Mb/minute, so I can't help feeling Movie Maker is not capturing at optimum quality.

What's the best way forward in terms of software and settings?
