XMP Files?

I took a load of photos yesterday, all in RAW (things went well so should have done it all in JPEG!). Downloaded them all last night, all fine. Now I'm going through and sorting them out, and some are listed as .XMP files which I don't seem to be able to open in PS CS3 - what's happened and is it fixable?

It's the Photoshop data file I think. Should appear in addition to the RAW/NEF file with the same number

Thanks, yeah I've just spotted that it's in addition - where I'd moved the CR2 file, the XMP didn't get moved in to the 'completed' folder too, so I ended up with the XMP's thinking something had corrupted!!
