Have just bought an S3, but no one will insure me, tell a lie Tesco quoted me £5,400 (after falling over I decided to decline the quote). If anyone has any info or has been in a similar predicament I would like to know.

, holy shit, how many points do you have or are you living in Moss-Side (sp)??

Should be able to get it down to £2K, try Privilage (used them in my first year of ownership - 24, £1200, full comp), or Mannings (although I've heard that Mannings won't touch first year TVR drivers). I'm with mannings for the second year and only pay £800 fully comp with trackday cover.

Shop around, good luck!

Whoah... And I thought I was hard done to! Had the same problem a few months back (and have had it in various cars for the last few years). Tesco were by far the most competitive for me (at ~£2k), with all the specialists not being able to provide a decent quote. Elephant were the closest "runner up" when I was looking, if that's of any use, and Direct Line said they'd have done a good quote if I was 25 rather than 24. That was on a Cerbera, though - imagine it might be different on an older car with specialists maybe being a bit more helpful.

There'll be loads on this if you search the PH archives for 'insurance'. Basic steps are:
1) join the TVRCC (as many companies like this)
2) contact specialist insurers
3) choose limited mileage policy
4) ask for classic policy (eg on cars over 10 years old)

All these will help. Things that will count against you are age and the fact it's your first TVR - companies have found that the highest accident rate is from people in their first year of TVR ownership. Can't be helped, but it should be less next year.

Other alternative is to convince someone else to take out the policy, put you on as a named driver, and pay them for it. Would probably have to be someone you trust ownership of the car to (i.e. family). Insuring some off-th-road rust bucket at the same time will help to build up your NCB. Had to do this when I was 17 & wanted a 2.5l engine!

As Pies said, I did have MASSIVE problems insuring my S3. But ended up going with Tescos. Cost me £1530 Fully comp, parked on the street in Newcastle.

The major porblem is that my inusurers won't touch you until you are 25, or as stated above, not for the first year of ownership.

It may be cheaper to get it insured under your father's name with you as a named driver. Unfortunately I don't live at home.

Privilege, Classic Line, mannings, wouldn't touch me. Try elephandt and put your mother as a named driver. Usually knocks some money off, but as elephant do require a CAT 1 they are proportionalty more expensive. £400 IIRC for me. Strange that Tesco is returning such a high quote.

The main problem is your lack of experience. 23 ok, 1 years driving. Therefore 1 years NCB at the most. I am 22 but have 5 years NCB, as well as 2 other cars inured under my name.

when 24yrs old, had a 4.0 chimaera. cost me about £1200 with elephant. Had to have my old man as a named driver (brings quote down), limited mileage, garaged for it to be reasonable. I had 3 points and 4 yrs NCD.

Now 26, pay £650-ish for Griff 500 through Sunninghill. No named drivers, just me, 6yrs NCD, still 3 points.

Best of luck! Sounds as though you may need to speak to some specialist brokers, as mentioned by others previously...

Definitely either the lack of experience, or the postcode that's causing the problem... I've had my licence for 7 years or so, but 'cos of some **** that caused an accident, Tesco had to quote me as a 24yr old, 1 years NCB, 1 *major* claim. Having the policy set to 10,000 miles worked out quite a bit cheaper than 12,000, but going any lower didn't help. There's not too much crime around here, so I didn't get stung on a bad postcode. Worth trying out a couple of locations/different lengths for holding the licence to see what you're being penalised on.
