As I have an oil leak from the sump I will be dropping the pan and resealing. I thought I would use the cork gasket and a smidging of sealant.
My question, will the oil pump require repriming once the sump has been off.

By the way its a V8s

Thanks

Pete

Pete prime it anyway don't risk it, one start up with no oil circulation really won't do it any good.
Just the small matter of going to the chemists for a jar of vaseline yikes

I'd also buy an oil priming tool to drive the oil pump through the distributor hole with a drill.

For those thinking what the f... on the V8 the oil pump doesn't self prime if it is emptied of oil - you have to take it apart (its on the outside of the engine) and fill it with vaseline. When you start it up the vaseline pulls the oil up from the sump. The vaseline breaks up and dissolves in the oil.

i cannot see the need to reprime the oil pump as this job would be the same as a standard oil change and filter service ,different if your messing with the oil pump on a strip down kev

Its best not to hang about when changing the filter otherwise if it is left off for any length of time it can drain down and need priming.

Pete I would stick a post on the Chimaera forum - there's plenty of V8 experts on there.

Chris

To prime the pump is it just a case of removing the pump located at ther back of the filter housing and packing the 2No cogs and the cavity they run in with vaseline. Or can you avoid the need to use vaseline if you use the priming tool method.

Thanks

You have to open the pump and pack with vaseline.

The priming tool allows you to spin the oil pump to get the pressure up without starting the engine.
You have to remove the distributor to get to the oil pump drive - so make sure you take note of its position - I set the engine at TDC then took a photo of the position of the rotor arm - make sure it is pointing at cylinder 1.

Where is the sump leaking?
Mine was pi55ing out on the drivers side at the back somewhere - there was no rust on that part of the chassis!

I think if you do not disturb the oil filter you may be OK - as it will hold oil in the pump - I'll ask one of the chimaera boys that I know.

leaking from the rear, only a small drip but gets worse if you fill to the max on the dip stick. One of those jobs that I have put off since I got it, but really wants sorting.

I have posted on Chimera forum and had some helpful replies.

Still might be worth trying to phone them as they say they have just about any size and shape on the front of their website so I assume the ones listed are examples rather than actual stock.
