Finally bought myself a DSLR. Picked up a Nikon D200 with 18-70mm zoom. So it's time to start experimenting in the new medium.

Are there any real significant differences though between digital & film when it comes to getting good shots?

You can take hundreds of photos and not have to worry about wasting film, you can just delete the rubbish. There's also the advantage of editing software like Photoshop or The Gimp (which is free). Oh and you can show them off on here for us lot to see without having to scan them in first.

1 It's a lot easier for a start.

2 The sensor has a lower dynamic range than film, so if there's a wide dynamic range (strong sun and dark shadows), you might want to experiment with HDR.

3 It's cheaper. All that money you save on processing and printing will soon be in a Camera shop following your next thread 'What lens next?'.

4 Following on from 3, it's seriously addictive.

Have fun

If you exposure bracket on film (say 3 shots), you throw two away. With digital, some of the info in the shot either side can be used in your final frame - either by digitally blending, or as mentioned, the more radical HDR.

Good choice - 98% of the photos on my website were taken with a D200. If you're coming from a film SLR I'd just say (1) learn what a histogram is and use it (2) start with JPG not RAW (3) get Photoshop.

Oh yes and (4) RTM.
