Well I finally lost it last night when my 'neighbours' fired a home modified rocket into the air at around 9pm - for it duely to fly straight into the side of my house and explode into my conservatory. Needless to say various physical & photographic evidence has been collected and a hell of a lot of shouting was done!

But what posseses otherwise 'normal' adults (4 families together, mix of male & female - all 30+) living in a relatively fortunate rurual area (all houses min £350k) to do such a damm stupid thing and behave as if it's their given right?

Don't get me wrong I'm no prude or angel but why do supposedly intelligent sane people think it's safe to fire a 1.5m rocket towards a house 100m away?

Local school seem to make a habit of it of recent years ie; we watch the display from relative safety of bedroom window, and they fire, v expensive incedinary rockets at our roof for nothing.
It began last night with a series of pre-emptive strikes at ours and, neighbours,
followed by the odd departing banger or what ever their called now in the street then all quiet the best one is other village school which pester ther horses the same way and also prat about in the field at the height of the evening when the horses stampede excellent (Mr burns mode off)

It doesnt take much modification of a firework to make it what we term an 'improvised explosive device' or IED. Most pipe bombs are filled with firework composition or shotgun propellant, and they provide the bulk of our work, in GB & Northern Ireland. Witness the series of attacks on phone boxes at the moment. All of which is rubbish for Joe Public, but at least keeps the likes of me in gainful employment.

tvrforever: sorry to hear of the irresponsible and incompetent use of fireworks by your neighbours. I hope they properly compensate you for any physical damage incurred.

BUT

Don't let this colour your view of fireworks generally. Personally I love them and, some years, enjoy letting a few off simply to enjoy the display. I now live in a house right next to a large parkland area and so if I propely seat the launch tube I can ensure that the thin bits of wood left behind after the rocket has burned away fall harmlessly to earth and will rot away in short order.

Yes people can be anti-social with them. Not everybody who enjoys them does so irresponsibly however.

Don - I agree with you but the # of people who do use them irresponsibly appears to be greatly on the increase. Initially I'd put this doen to kids and loads of 'firework discount stores' which appear to open in June for the Nov market. However the more I think about it the more I realise the real danger is from people myage (i.e. 30+) who hae grown up with them (familiarity = comtempt etc.) and now have the funds to buy much bigger ones - without realising what they really are. (Have you ever seen a large firework rocket explode underneath a car? Makes an 'interesting show' for those far enough away to still see..)

Equally is it not possible to enjoy these in Nov rather than for 3 weeks prior??? I pity those with pet dogs, guinea pigs etc.

Next Sat I shall be at our local radio & rugby club show having a beer & eating a burger watching a damm good show in safety.

Sorry if I sound somewhat 'old codger' today but I'm genuinely concerned that 10mins earlier we'd been standing right where the damm thing exploded!

My pet nag this.. I love fireworks like the rest of us. But why oh why do numpties buy and set them off weeks before the big day. Do I have to keep my dog and cat in for 6 weeks either side of bonfire night?

Poor dog spent yesterday eve, dithering down the side of the sofa coz some prat was letting off fireworks nearby.

Why can't shops let you order your fireworks and collect them the day before..

I appreciate that some people would then store fireworks for special occasions and this could be a fire hazard. but not my prob i am afraid.

It was crazy round here last night, it looked like there was half a dozen displays going on between about 8:00pm and 11:00pm, I can't beleive that was not the big night, I reckon next saturday is going to be insane...

I can agree entirely. I live in a dodgy area of York where a firework goes off every five minutes - either a dustbin, a car or a phonebox. w*nkers.

Don't mention bloody fireworks. Round here they started 4 weeks ago and although not in great numbers go off up to 12:30 am.

I've never liked fireworks but can tolerate the weekend before and the weekend after bonfire night.

But now it's like Beiruit for 2 months.

And there's trick or treating to put up with.

I'm putting a notice up this year to say no thanks.

Then again, I'll have to keep an eye on the cars because some little sh!t will damage one and if they touch our cars....................

Well I'll let you figure it out

Went to a display last night A proper organised display etc. I was totally unaware that they have (in this particular large seaside town in Essex) One every week from the end of sept to Nov 8th.

These were proper display fireworks in a residential area.

I have to confess I have a sneaking desire to launch a signal rocket from the local shopping center carpark on saturday afternoon.

They just go up and let off an almighty BOOM which sets off car any sensitive car alarms below...I reckon there would be a couple of hundred car alarms going off

this is all very strange - I live in a fairly rough area in t'frozen, and I hear only a few fireworks a night - there certainly aren't big shows every week for weeks beforehand! madness! what about the day itself? kind of dilutes the occasion I think...anyway it's all a bit over the top in an instant gratification sort of way. Every single commercial celebration has to be milked and milked until it's dry - it, lets add father's day....ok a bit trite but fair enough...then grandparents day? bl**dy hell, it's not as if they feel left out now is it? next there'll be childrens day, or bl**dy homeless peoples day or some crap...damn I'm sick of it - instant gratification can take a running f***.

sorry - I've not even had any alcohol....just couldn't contain myself

The fireworks set off this week-end might be related to Diwali. When I was living in South Africa Diwali was celebrated with fireworks.

I agree that it's annoying that people let off fireworks at random for the 4-5 weeks preceeding Guy Fawkes (& any other celebrations).

Personally, i love fireworks, but i would cause i work in the industry

IMHO all firework sales to the public should be stopped, these are after all explosives. Shows should be left to professionals who have recieved the correct training, thus stopping scrotes letting them off in the street etc.

Have a safe bonfire night!!!

I'd like to see them banned and used only with permission for organised displays and the likes. All over by 10 pm for just a few selected events. It could get rid of all the mischief makers and twats in one go. The displays can be excellent. I think they can be very anti-social for old people, domestic pets and wild life etc. We don't need them.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one. Bloody fireworks going off 3 weeks before Nov 5th and 3 weeks after. Then 3 weeks before New Year and 3 weeks after, then 3 weeks before 4th July and 3 weeks after, plus assorted birthdays, anniverseries and "Christ, we haven't let off any fireworks for ages, let's do some now" events and it never bloody stops round our way.

My dog is a nervous wreck!

When does Diwali (Hindu festival of lights) start and end this year? From what I understand (which isn't a great deal, I'll admit ) it's around Oct/Nov and may (*may*) account for some of the legitimate fireworkery in the weeks around Nov 5th...

On the other hand, it won't account for my next door neighbours but one trying to set my house on fire like they usually do. The light their fireworks a safe distance from their house, which, selfishly, is an unsafe distance from mine.
