E39 M5 gearbox whine
Discussion
I seem to have a small whining noise coming from what seems to be the gearbox first thing in the morning. It only makes the noise for the first two miles or so afterwhich it quietens down. I have just had a new clutch. I have also just had the gearbox and diff oil changed.
Anyone know what it might be?

[quote=< FORZA WEST]Sounds very much like the thrust bearing is chattering between the lever and pressure plate-too larger gap between the 2.
Was the clutch replaced because of the noise???

The clutch was replaced as it was slipping under full throttle in forth gear. The thrust bearing was replaced when the clutch was done (checked with dealer). However, I throught that the thrust bearing would also be noisy with the clutch in? Also I would have throught that the noise would still exist after the car has warmed up. I hope that you are correct as it will be going back to the BMW dealer who has done the clutch.

Just sounds like a bit of wear and tear in the gearbox. Wouldn't worry unless it starts getting worse over a short period of time. My e34 M5 box chatters like a goodun at tick over.....but then it's done 170k miles and 'they all do that sir'.
I've had a few leggy BMs that have wined and chattered to no detriment what so ever.

I thought much the same but just wanted to make sure there were no specific well know issues which may give off the same symptons.
My caterham r500 runs a semi helical gearbox which is very noisy mainly due to the interaction of the teeth and therefore I anticipate that the M5 box will be noisy as it will be similarly strengthened.
Cheers
