Some of the photo printers offer a book printing service where you create your own book of images (and I assume text if you want) on templates on their website, and they then print it, bind it and send it to you.

Has anyone ever used one of these services that they could recommend?

I've dome them (and sell them) via Photobox, Blurb and LuLu.

www.Blurb.com is the best of the three IMO

Ditto 8 or 9 I guess, with yophoto, blurb and fotobook (.co.uk)

fotobook the best sortware, most flexible. Good range of covers to (esp. for weddings).

Blurb (with the high quality option) the best quality, software's a bit unflexible, but cheap. Turn-around very slow though - 2 wks+.

+1 For using iPhoto / Apple.
It took about 3-4 weeks to come though (Christmas holidays in that time probably slowed it down a bit though?)
But when it arrived I was impressed. Well worth it IMO thumbup

We had one done for by friends after our wedding through fotobook, the quality was great, although ours did have slight damage on delivery. When we contacted them, they were more than happy to provide a replacement copy FOC

I'm PC only, so the mac options are non-starters, but it looks like there's plenty of choice!

.. just stick to the download first, then upload at the end type, not the do everything online type where every button click has to be verified byt the server...

As I said, fotobook or blurb are a good place to start, my choice between the two usually comes down to speed/the end format I am after.
Here's one of mine...

I used bobsbooks last year to do a memory book for my Mum and Dads 50th anniversary. I was very happy with the result

Another again for iPhoto. Took loads of pictures at my Dad's retirement party and dinner, the end product from Apple, a hardback book, looked excellent and he was really touched.

Also, if none of the templates suit, you can create an image Photoshop to lay out your own pics and text and upload it as a full page image.
