Cable change Gurus!!!
Discussion
Please help gents.....
have finally taken the plunge and started mi panelling..... having come to the conclusion if I continue trying to plan to the umpteenth degree, it'll never get built!
So, when using a cable shift the factory only indicate one hole in the rear cockpit lower skin. Is that because their system uses a single cable route?
I'm hoping to use a US system (Cableshift),for my oddball box, which has two, well spread cables that I think would be best running down each outer face of the lower engine cradle (V shaped frame), then pass through the rear firewall, either side of centre, similar to the handbrake cables. I need to plan the cables final route so I can order them at the appropriate length and also drill/bracket accordingly.
If anyone gone this route with their linkage, how did it work out?
Cheers
regards,
Dave.

The factory setup uses 2 cables that both pass through the bulkhead on the NS close to the handbrake cable. I made 2 holes about 20mm dia - not exactly sure as it was a while ago but I had plastic grommets that fit them.
It is quite a tight fit to keep them within the cover that Ultima supply that covers the gear linkage and the handbrake.
After about 3 years of use the cables seized and I have replaced them with bespoke heavy duty Teflon lined cables - the new cables also seem to make the change quicker and smoother. The new cables had bigger end fittings that I had to adapt and therefore open up the original holes. Both cables pass out of the NS because that is the way they flow then they can both bend around the back of the gearbox.

Dave: I have a CMS produced cable controlled G50 box. For a vareity of my own reasons I have had to take the cables in and out a couple of times. The one thing that I will say without hesitation is that putting the cables through a couple of inchs either side of the centerline of the car is the way to go. I know this because when I take my cables in and out and they are mounted on the centerline of the car two things happen the crank pulley is right there but more importantly the V of the frame on the engine side is in the way. Don't get me wrong I can get them in and out but it would be a whole lot easier if they were offset a bit. Lee
