Are you sure it needs replacing?
One of the characteristics of this gearbox is a snatchy entry into second gear. I think it's caused by a "strengthened" design, allowing for unsympathetic 1st -> 2nd gearchanges by drivers doing grand prix starts.
Can anyone with technical knowledge comment?
I find the gearbox responds better to a slower gearchange than other manual cars I frequently drive.

when i change it from 1st to 2nd slow it is ok but if i change it fast it crunchis some one told me if i go to a gearbox place thay can change the 2nd gear for 500 pounds do anyone know if this is right
Define 'Fast'?The E39 gearbox is a recaltitrant brute at the best of times. Perhaps it could do with some fresh oil?
Alternatively, is the slave doing it's job properly?
IIRC from reading on the M5board the M5 gearbox is not serviceable (or at least not economically), so if a synchro is lost, you might be looking at a replacement gearbox.
However, try to familiarise yourself with the gearbox (assuming you are new owner), as the 1st to 2nd gearchange from cold is very knotchy. Also, new fluids certainly helped mine being smoother.

Change the gearbox oil for some Royal Purple stuff.Massive difference! The selector system is a weird one on the big Getrags-awkward 2nd is normal after some wear and tear.
Quite common feedback on the 6 speed Getrag, 1st to 2nd always feels to crunch, and it does feel hard to the hand as it echoes through the stick. Also the case coming back down the box 3rd to 2nd when speed changing.
Without road testing its hard to say yes thats norm or you do have a problem so recommend you have it tested.
If there is a problem then the Getrag boxes are repairable but very few can get the internals for them, as the boxes are licensed to BMW. However there is a hidden back door at getrag which will release the parts with the blessing of BMW.
The syncro is likely to cost £380ish + fitting into the box which will be circa 5 hours then the cost for remove and instal of the box @ 4 hours.
A main dealer wont offer this, BMW dont sell the internals of any of the gearboxes via a dealer or even to a dealer so you will only get the replacement gearbox.
