Anyone got one of these? Would love to hear your thoughts on it.

I'm thinking that this would pair quite well with the kit lens! (from what I've seen so far I actually think the 18-55 on the 450d/1000d is quite good considering it's free! biggrin) These two lenses along with the nifty fifty (and possibly a wide angle/macro for good measure) and I think I'm done?!

Anyone used this lens as a walkaround?

It's been lauded quite a bit on here, as has the 2.8.

I had it for a couple of months and loved it - only sold it as I was running out of cash in some far flung corner of the world.

It's light, quick, very sharp and pretty versatile. It's top of my list of lenses to rebuy once I get into gainful employment again.

The Sigma is well received as well - RobDickinson and a few others are impressed with that one too.

Generally thought to be one of Canons sharpest zooms smile

imo its a bit long for general walk-around on a 450D (or any APS-H camera) but pretty good for general sports / portraits.

Go to a shop with your camera and take some snaps, you'll be able to get a feel for the range smile

I'm still intending on replacing my 70-300 with a 70-200L due to the faster focusing speed smile

Whether your 'done' or not really depends on how much you start to like L series and fast prime lenses winkhehe

Cheers.

Yes it's a stunner: fast USM, amazing build quality and small and light enough to carry around. BIG bonuses are that it doesn't extend when focussing or zooming which really puts its' handling ahead of lesser lenses. Works with 1.4x extender too.

It gives away 1 stop of light to the mahoosive 70-200 F2.8L IS but carrying that thing around is something else. It's about the size and weight of a bazooka...

One word: awesome! Great for motorsport. I'm a long-term Canon SLR/D-SLR user. I currently use a 40D. As well as the 70-200, I use a 17-85 IS 3.5-5.6 as walk-around, a 10-22 for architecture and panoramic landscapes, and a 50 1.8 for portraits and in place of the 17-85 when I want a wide aperture e.g. to get shallow depth of field or in low light. Ideal kit - except when I think about adding a 17-55 f2.8...
