autosport said:

Colin McRae is on the verge of quitting the World Rally Championship after failing to secure a drive for next year, and could run next year's Dakar Rally for Nissan, according to this week's AUTOSPORT magazine.

The Scot came close to clinching a WRC deal last week, but now that has fallen through he says he is ready to channel his energies into other areas of motorsport for 2004.

"I'm close to pulling the plug on the whole thing," said McRae. "I'm not enjoying it as much as I should be, and I always said that when that happens, then I'd stop."

Should McRae fail to find a WRC drive, other options open to him include an entry on next year's Dakar Rally, probably with the Nissan team. McRae is at the top of the Japanese firm's list of possible drivers to join Ari Vatanen in January's African classic.

"That type of event really appeals to me," said McRae, "and I've heard good things about the team. Nothing is signed at the moment. We're just talking."

Opinions, it's big but not very commercially covered by the media (except some coverage on Eurosport).

Sounds good to me. Depends whether he's motivated by media coverage or driving enjoyment really.

I was thinking that a lot of his fans probably won't be able to see him if he does it. I've no doubt he'd do it for the racing challenge.

I really hope McRae does do the Dakar...will be very interesting to see how he performs.

A lot of people get Eurosport now...and their coverage of the Dakar is very good ...with McRae in it....the TV coverage may get better

well lets study the facts, no trees, wide open spaces, yeah i think colin could do well in this!
seriously though, i hope he finds himself doing something enjoyable, he has come accross as a nice bloke who has been badly treated. i've always fancied doing one of these long distance rally events......

Unfortunately with Colin I get the impression he is still mostly motivated by money. He probably would have a drive in WRC again if he'd take a (huge) pay cut.

Not as if he needs the money these days.

Be interestin to see how he does in Raid or other motorsport though.

In to-days newspaper...there was an article saying that he was going to take a year out....then regroup for 2005...so still no real concrete news.
