was thinking of getting the BMW but am strangley drawn to the stealth factor of the Merc

So which is best? I realise the Merc is an auto but not the end of the world

although an M fan my guess would be the Merc is better built etc

The Merc may be better built (I don't know either way on that), but for driving dynamics the M3 will be ahead - the Evo more so than the 3.0.

Out of those two I would be drawn towards the Merc.

I was considering one of these as well so perfectly understand your problem. The killer for me was the Auto, as well as the Merc being just a bit too stealth for me (not that the e36 was the pinnacle of car design mind).

As for driving dynamics I would reckon unless you're constantly driving at more than 9/10ths on the road I don't think you'd notice that much TBH. Having said that I would consider that tracking it could either be a hoot or a nightmare. Let us know wink

ETA: I know it's trivial beyond all belief but having just looked at a couple of them on AutoTrader I was reminded that one of the other things I hated about them was the steering wheel design.. the naffest thing this side of a Max Powa'd Nova straight out of Halfwits... vomit

Is a C43 out of the question?

Modern day 500E for a good dollop less cash. Awesome tool.

I had a C43, which was a very good car and with a fair amount more bhp and torque than the C36. However, the C36 is apparently a very strong engine, but with all W202 (and the previous E-series, W210) be very (VERY) careful of rust. Can't stress this enough!

would love one but out of budget and apparently much more to run, parts etc cost a lot more
