Been offered a 4.7 TVR engined RX7 - Advice please!!
Discussion
Hi all!!
Last year someone went into the back of my hi spec Nissan S14 and wrote it off, but I was going to rebuild using a new shell that Ive got at home!!
However, Im going traveling at the end of the year and I dont think im going to have time to build it and use it properly before I go So Ive decided to sell up as I want a toy for the summer!!
A friend of mine has offered me his mint 1988 FC RX7 that has been fitted with a rebuilt 4.7 TVR V8 engine with a port and polish and a fast road cam, he things producing around 300bhp!?!?
Ive always fancied a V8 and Ive always liked the RX7 so this kills 2 birds with one stone!!
However, im not clued up on this engine so I thought you guys would be the people to ask for advice!!
Is there anything I should particularly look at with these engines or are they as strong as a V8 should really be??
Any advice would be great..... cheers, Scott

Parts will be easier and cheaper to come by and the RV8 is an industry standard - loads of people know it and how to work on it, fix the regular problems etc. A TVR AJP V8 will tend to require more specialist knowledge and therefor higher cost.
Can't say I'm really an expert though as I'm a V6er. I defer to the expertise of the Wedgers and Chim/Griff chaps.....

Some RV8 TVR motors have very little done to them anyway, Just a cam. You can tell if the motor is at least a later block by seeing if it is cross bolted. This is where the mains are bolted externally from the side. How is the capacity taken out to 4.7? Is a slightly stroked 4.6? depends how much you are paying for it i suppose. If it DOES dyno at 300bhp then it is a pretty good one regardless.

Here is some really bad camera phone Pics I took the other night if anyone can ID the engine????

An RV8 if ever I saw one.
and what a novel place to put a battery

Of course only TVR would consider putting a battery in the electrically operated boot a logical solution after all.

Its pre serp front end (has a Vee belt not a flat one), assuming its a pre serp engine then it won't be cross bolted will it as its too old???
I'm asking not telling
Worth posting the first part of the engine number which will be something like 40A - its down under the front two spark plugs on the oil filler side.
