The new M cars use 'Castrol Edge for M Engines' - rather than the standard 'Castrol Edge' - probably a bit of marketing/backhanders too, but if you read the oil specification you will see a small difference in formulation.

Ultimately if they've worked with the oil manufacturer and spent lots developing an oil which they believe protects the engine better than any other available, then use it.

Have a look at the spec sheets on the castrol website to compare the differences between the oils and see if there's anything that stands out as different - it might be something as simple as having less of one mineral or another, which works well in cast iron blocks, but eats into the liners on BMW M engine?
