at a new years party i met someone who worked in the local gamestation and plays xbox 360. which is fair enough.
but, they also own a playstation 3 (i'm not starting a ps3/360 fight here) and own for one reason only - metal gear solid. other than this, and i can quote, he 'uses it as a doorstop'.
and on top of this, he has the kojima logo tattooed on his arm.

now to put this in perspective, he owns a 300 pound 'doorstop' and a 50 quid game.
so he has spent 350 pounds on a doorstop and a game to play on till he's finsihed, apart from re-runs.
so in a sense he's spent 350 pounds for ONE game.

which got me thinking, is this a dedicated gamer, OR an obsessive nutter?

I bought a 360 for a few games I wanted (GTA4 and Forza 2) but haven't taken the Forza 2 disc out for probably 2 months.
If that makes me an obsessive nutter, so be it! wink

A mate of mine has gone off the rails with the World of Warcraft thing. The problem is there is no end of the game as such and I hope he sees the light soon..

My Bro-in-law bought a PS3 purely for the fact that it was a blu-ray player. So really if he only bought it to play MGS then why not.

When you begin to only enter rooms after first checking all four corners..

Another would be tapping your right temple upon entering a dark room only to find that you are not actually wearing night vision goggles and that the folk inside are not hostiles nor allies, they are collegues... hehe

I'll be buying a PS3 purely for GT5. But I will also use it for other things such as the Blueray player and maybe a few other games.

There are lotsof people on PH who spent over 100 on wheels to play rFactor.
But the ammount I have spent per hours play is very little as i play the game alot.

I have bought new graphics cards costing a few hundred to play a new game.

The tatoo is a bit weird, but if he is spending lots of time on his PS3 then he is getting good value out of it, its the people who buy a new game every week and only play each one for a new hours then change to another that are wasting money...

Exactly right. The amount of people who spend £500 - £1000 on a set of golf clubs and play once a year never gets mentioned. People who play football 2 or 3 nights a week for 1-2 hours and then go to the pub afterwards are never questioned but if you have a console and spend an hour a day on it and are over 20 then people think you are a bit wierd.

I had to stop playing Eve-Online. It was taking up far too much of my life and I could see the potential for it to get worse. Some people must live virtually all the time ingame on this, WoW and other MMORPGs etc - that's where it crosses the line for me.

I highly doubt you can stay away when Walking In Station is released later this, or next year! hehe

If (when wink) I buy one, it'll be for the same.
At the moment I'll want it for MGS, GT5 and probably not a lot else! smile

I built a whole new computer for CS:S then played it for five years. Cost to me was probably around £600. Obviously it did the other obligatory things a pc can do..

When you're xbox packs up you send it off for repair the same day but you then go and buy another console as you need you're fix of COD5 and really can't do without your're xbox.
That's exactly what a mate of mine did to week before xmas the thought of not going on live over the festive period was totally out of the question now he's got a spare if it ever happend again.

No lifer comes to mind lol

The tattoo is a bit far, but I have a PS3 and a 360, as well as many other older consoles. I rarely play the PS3, I have 4 games for it, one of which is still sealed in it's wrapper (part of the bundle I got). I do use it for DVDs/ Bluray though, so it's not quite a doorstop.

I have a history of doing this, buying a console just to play a single game, and then playing nothing but that game for months and months. I bought my original Playstation for Gran Turismo, then used it for Gran Turismo 2. I had a couple of other games, but they never saw much playtime.

When GT3 came out, I upgraded to a PS2, and I played GT4 so much I ended up buying extra discs, as I was wearing out certain areas of the disc.

I was hoping to get a PS3 when the full version of GT5 comes out, but for now I'll stick with the Xbox360, which is used almost exclusively for Forza 2! (though Guitar Hero III did get an airing over the Christmas holidays...)

The way I see it, I would prefer to bite the bullet buy the console and play it till it drops, rather than blow a load of money on games I play twice and then leave to gather dust.

The amusing thing is that Metal Gear will probably be launched on the Xbox too which will be the first time ever it hasn't been launched on only the Playstation.
