I confess, I know nothing about PS3s so go easy on me.
Santa brought me a nice 1080p plasma and the thought of a Blu-ray player now appeals.
My understanding is that a PS3 will play Blu-ray discs as well as any stand alone player and can do a host of other things. It would seem they come with 40, 80 & 160Gb options.
If so far so good could the ones who know please tell me what else you can use a PS3 for, other than play games? What size HDD is best to go for, bigger the better etc?

I wouldn't bother about the hard drive size, as the hard drive comes in a caddy; i.e. under two screws, and it slides out
You can put any sized hard drive you want (physically, it must be laptop size; 2.5") But in storage size? Your wallet is your limit!
It plays all cd's/ dvd's/ blue-ray discs (BD's.)
All media format (copied/ downloaded films/ music.)
It has wi-fi in-built for internet access/ on-line gaming/ home networking.
An amazing piece of kit. Plus, it's very, very quiet !!

Are you saying the processor is the same for all 40/80/160 models then (size problem solved
)?I am not too sure the internet connection would be of any interest unless maybe software updates?
Do you get any virus type problems if connected to the net?
Presumably it could be used to back up data from other PCs then once on the wireless network?

Right guys I have got a quick question or 2, when I connect my usb pen to the ps3 it will not find any of my images except some stored digi cam pics and I am also having similar issues with mp3 files. There are some on my usb but in a folder somewhere, would the ps3 only find them if they are in the root folder and not hiding away? Cheers!

The internet connection is crucial for downloading firmware updates (especially for the blu-ray player - keeps all the functions up to date - something a standalone blu-ray player can't do). Also, you can get on bbc iplayer and stream content from that (HD and SD).
You could also buy the PS3 TV thing that enables you to record TV direct to the PS3 (like a sky plus box basically).
I suppose you could use it to back up date from other PCs if you wanted to.

something like that... apparently you need to create a file called PS3 on the USB stick, then sub files for pictures, movies, drivers etc. Never tried it myself though.iirc, the only different in the models are three factors:
1) Hard disk size.
2) USB Slots
3) backwards compatible
=1) You can replace the hard drive, very easily. Sony have designed the console to allow the simplicity.
=2) They either have 2x USB slots, or 4. However, you can add a USB extender. Any make/ model will fit and work perfectly. I have a <no brand> 4-port USB extender in mine, which gives me 5x USB slots.
=3) Unless you have any PS1/ PS2 games, I wouldn't bother with this.
Internet access will give you updates for both your console - and, games
Not too sure about back-ups? Unless you use the PS3 as a "storage device"
However, you can install linux onto the PS3 and use it as a computer.
I've not heard anything about virus's *YET* But, they will be around soon enough. No doubt about it. We have virus's for our phones, so why not consoles
Best bet however, would be to search the internet for more informaiton.
A lot of people have dedicated sites/ blogs to their consoles.

I suppose I will inevitably get drawn into a driving type game, any recommendations?
Does the console come with one/two wireless controllers and if so can you have two people racing each other or can you only race against the machine?

They have some excellent deals on, especially the bundle packs.
On the right hand side of the screen, they have the games in categories - select Driving/ Racing.
Not all games are two player though. Drive is single player only, which was a major let down.
If it's to be used as a media centre, investing in the official sony remote would certainly be advantageous.
The pads are similar to a wii controller too; in that they have motion sensors. Only a hand full of games use this feature, but more are coming.
Aim for the dualshock pad - it erm, vibrates

Disappointed that I cannot get my PSP to go online and get the update i need to hook it up to the ps3 for remote play though.... just get a dns error.
Weird thing is it has been online, not for about 2 years though, so I wonder if the firmware is so old now it wont hook up to update...
With all the travel I do abroad, the PSP remote play and "play tv" would be great, but I wont be investing if the PSP is problematic.
I am impressed with the blue ray player too, vry smooth, very clear HD picture, very impressive console tbh.
