Hi all, I'm looking for a digital SLR camera and wanted a little bit of advice.

I previously had a Canon EOS 1000 35mm camera and have some lenses for this - would I be able to use these lenses on a Canon/ any other make of digital SLR or do I have to start from scratch.

Also, what sort of camera would others reccmmend - at the moment I'm looking mainly at Canon EOS 1000D and Nikon D60 but would be grateful of any advice about these or alternatives.

im fairly new to this DSLR world but have just brought a D80 from Jessops, for around £440 with a UV filter, 18-55mm Nikkor VR lens, UV lens, 20 free 7x5 prints from jessops, 8GB SDHC memory card and a free camera bag to store it and accessories. I'm loving right now and can't put it down. Wouldn't know about the canon lenses though, sorry.

Good luck with your search,
Dave

It's an EF mount camera, so your lenses will at least "fit" onto Canon DSLRs. Not sure whether AF will automatically work - would depend on the exact lenses, but I don't see why not.

You'd need to get mount adapters if you wanted to buy a Nikon, Olympus or Sony body instead though.

Canon EF lens's wont mount on a nikon - the canon mount is bigger.

IMO the 1000D is better than either of the cheap nikons (d40 or D60) especialy as you may have lens's that'll work with it.

Understand though that because non of these are full 35mm frame thers the crop factor which will make your lens's sem longer ( * 1.6) so 100mm will 'look like' 160mm.

Its OK for longer lens's (quite handy with a 70-300 etc) but makes your old 'walk about' lens wrong and stuffs most wides.

The 1000D comes with a decent kit lens though (18-55, effectivly 28- 90ish) and will be fine with all of canons EF lens's, and most sigma's etc.

All your filters etc will be fine to though the coloured ones etc are probably not worth using.

thanks for all the useful advice guys. I weighed everything up and checked prices etc. The best deal I could find was on the 1000D which, with Canon's cash back deal came in at £293 (with a free bag) from Jessops.

I picked it up this morning but my wife is insistent I can't play with my new toy until next week - I have a big birthday coming up and this is my present. That notwithstanding I'm pleased and very excited.
