What Tony (tozerman) said with respect to operation of the heater.
The water valve pipe is the one where you catch your hand on the operating wires by the bulkhead above the clutch master cylinder. The wires may be disconnected from this end or from the heater control sliders behind the dashboard.

Mine blows hot, but the 'fast' fan setting has always been a bit temperamental and the 'slow' setting is VERY slow. I believe switch problems are common, so it might just need a clean if that's your issue.
+1
Its a TR7 switch if its the up / down type, though I think MEP12345 posted that a Range Rover switch fits and is cheaper.
The switch on mine looks as if it has been overheating and this caused the plastic to relax slightly so that the contacts moved. There's no practical way to fix this now, but it would have been relatively easy to clean up the contacts if I'd got to it soon enough. So the moral is if the switch seems to be playing up, best fix it sooner rather than later.

and I think the ones at the link below are the correct ones although I've modified the internals of a Range Rover Interior light switch

I haven't checked the TR7 headlight ones so at your own risk

Edited to add: question sent to ebay seller.
Edited again to add: looking at this thread http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... it appears the ebay item has the same part number so should be the 3-ways switch. The slider part would need swapping as explained in that thread as it is a different style. This is helpful for me as my blower will no longer go on 'high' so I'm going to attempt to clean the switch tomorrow. Don't know if the original poster on this thread has this issue or not...

Managed to remove the switch panel (those nuts are a real pain to get to) and the switch look pretty knackered. Bits of plastic everywhere
Going to see if SS Preperations can get me a new switch quickly, as I only have my garage for another week!
Can anyone tell me how to get the plastic 'surround' off the switch that is stopping me from totally removing it? The guide I'm following says it simply clicks on, but I'm having difficultly removing it!
Edited to add: switch ordered. Guy at SS Preperations seemed very friendly and knowledgeable.

Crumbs what a wealth of information. I can see you really want me to keep the S3
and I'll see about the heater. The blow works, it's just no hot air comes out. May be a blockage somewhere. Thanks allot guys
Sounds like a blockage, but I'm sure others will be along soon to give advice. The S forum is one of the best on PH BTW, my fan issue now sorted. Cleaned switch. Hopefully put in back together correctly (the little metal see-saws had popped out. All now works!
Will keep the new one I ordered as a spare. All I need do now is put the sodding panel back on. Going to try to get some wing-nuts first which should help me keep some level of sanity.page3 said:
