Hello

My trusty Mk3 of 13 years old is being a bit of a pain, so wondering if the wise sages of pistonheads can help out.

I have always had a 1.8 Golf mk3 in GL or driver form for the run to the dump/shops etc, and oddly as they get older they always seem to do the following and no garage has fixed it yet.

On a short run the car is fine, but after a while on the motorway you come off and stop at a roundabout and the revs die to an random 200rpm and when you go to pull away it either dies or it lunges forward and then picks up after a couple of seconds. It will continue doing that around town but it will restart. When it's really bad even putting revs on it to pull away from the lights will make it die though.

Had exactly the same issue on my previous golf, and fault codes were clear, a low voltage from a coil was found but not warranting the cut outs. Anybody any ideas? As i say, a trip to tesco's down the road and it's fine, and even after it goes through stalling etc after around 20mins of stalling it usually sorts itself out with a nice steady idle.

Happy Boxmas to you all.

I would bet its the throttle body, it clogs up and wont allow air to pass at idle, simply cured by removing the throttle body and giving it a good clean with carb cleaner or similar, get it back to silver(or as close as possible) re-fit, start car and allow to idle before going for a drive, varying the revs and workload, should sort it out.

Also clean the idle control valve out while you are on with carb cleaner.
