Well as an RS4 owner and ex 911 driver I would say they are about the same but the porker has a slight advantage on the fun factor.

Problem with the R8 and i have driven a few is that so many were bought by speculators trying to make a buck, loads came onto the market at once all for top dollar then the price of fuel and the c/crunch and there are some brilliant bargains out there my dealer was desperate to get me into a year old car for less than 69K black in colour with all the options. Problem was round the ring I think it was 3 seconds faster than the RS4 and I got 4 seats + luggage.

The R8 has the same exhaust type as the RS4 with flaps that open as engine revs increase then closes at the top end these are driven by a vacuum so its pretty easy to block the pipes and hold the flaps open full time.

\i still think after the old TT its the most stunning car I have aver seen.

R8 values are already in freefall!

Compared to the 997,the R8 is a bigger car and is more difficult to live with everyday for parking etc, visibility. The 997 is very good for this-its a very compact car.
The R8 is a fair bit faster, with better acceleration and more powerful and it shows. Its also more showy and attracts more attention than the 997.
Im not sure on the service intervals but the Audi V8 is a very good charismatic engine.I personally prefer auto but find the R-Tronic a bit jerky, maybe I just have to get used to it.

I've been thinking about getting a R8 for a month or two now and was wondering if anyone could tell me how often they need serviced? My 997 only needs serviced every 20,000 Miles, is the R8 any better or worse?

Also has anyone gone from a 997 into an R8? How did you think the R8 compares, any better/worse? Is it usable on a daily basis?

I was also wondering what's the noise level like? I saw top gear testing it and one of them commented on it being quite, do you think it would need a sports exhaust?

What does everyone think will happen to the price of the R8? Now obviously every thing's going down at the moment, but will the launch of the R8 V10 just send the V8's prices in to free fall?

Thanks
It's a tricky call. Personally think they should hold up reasonably well when the v10 is launched in january. It's a bit of a tricky one. The V10 has to my mind not much to offer over the V8 in terms of performance (.7sec faster to 60 and just under 10mph faster) which I am not sure is worth the extra 20k over the V8 which i think will mean most will probably stick with their v8's.
Only real advantage is most things are standard.

Personally would wait around three to four months before making a decision by then the v10 will be on sale and anyone upgrading will have their cars up for sale and prices will reflect it.Also think it could do with a sports exhaust standard is a smidge too quiet.

FWIW I prefer it to porsche's maybe just because to me porsches are really common and alll look the same to me.

Oh yeah also servicing is intermittent dep on use upto around every 16-18k miles.

Hi, I bought my R8 in June after 10 years of Porsche ownership, including a 997 C2S and a 997 GT3. The R8 is so much more special than the C2S although you get a tremendous amount of attention, but always positive - I got some abuse in the 911s from hot hatch drivers. As for performance on the road there isn't much between the C2S and the R8 but the R8 is more of an event - it sounds fabulous, particularly in built up areas! I was very unhappy with the noise from the 997 C2S and the gen 2 is even worse - a sports exhaust is a must with them - the GT3 sounds fantastic though smile The R8 isn't an out and out racer like the GT3 and I miss that a bit but I am glad I made the change.

Friend of mine upgreded from a 996 to a 997 C2S Gen 2 with PDK. He rejected the car to to gearbox failure and brought an R8. The car is used every day. Turning circle is poor and it scrapes speed bumps much more than the 911. Apart from that it drives very well and it's been reliable!
