Data Logging - Advice Please
Discussion
I now have permission to compete in a motor racing series next year (most probably the Ginettas) and am after some advice on data logging.
Basically with little experience of race driving and even less of car setup, the main purpose of the device would be to time track sections for comparisons of setup and/or driver (improving?)ability. I need an accelerometer therefore and some decent software to analyse the resutls, but don't need millions of other channels after speed, revs and a couple of engine sensors (can't afford to blow it up).
What do people use - is it the standard PI 2 system, or are there much more cost effective systems out there that give similar feedback.

I use the DL90 and video camera setup.
you can se the Dl90 at
www.race-technology.com
and download and play with the sw
the best bit is the cost 500 quid!!
if you loocking for a dashboard based system spa seem to do a good mid priced version....

You can get a full logging Dashes for £500 too, a "Digidash" from CustomAutotech/ETB and a Mychron 3 from www.speedlog.co.uk both cost about £5-600.

Graham said:500 quid is for nothing - especially as there is likely to be a bit of driver variability for a good while yet. I'd love to find a reason to buy a Pi system, but at the end of the day the only realistic instrumentation mounting point in the Ginetta is in the centre of the dash 'mini style', so a massive analogue rev counter is possibly the way forwards.

The Dl90 also looks more than adequate for deciding which corners go well with all the suspension settings wound one way, and which go well with them in the reverse direction, which in the absence of any real race experience was a requirement of the system.
Sold - or will be when I finally sign the order for the car.
Cheers guys

You can fit a Pi 2 in a G20 on the dash, look in Del's (11) car. He had one last year but don't know if he's took it off now. You need to get within 0.5 secs of the pace before it will do any good really though. Quite a few in Ginettas have the Farringdon lap timer with datalogging but thats about £800 and is nowhere near as good as a Pi 2. If you have a grand to blow on a Pi I would spend the cash and get some driver coaching instead, if you are new to racing, which will give much better results per £.
