My mate and I want to be able to create a non-dedicated server in rFactor.

We followed the instructions, opened ports 34447 TCP and 34397 UDP, on the server's router and started the server. However, clients cannot connect, we can see the server in the matchmaker list but when a join attempt is made an error message is shown "Join timed out".

The first time this occurred, it was caused by the software firewall, but even when the firewall was turned off completely, the error still occurs.

Please help. I want to race Carrera Cup cars around the Nordschleife. smile

Thanks.

Does port forwarding still apply even if the software firewall is turned off?

If the router is also acting as a firewall, I suppose port forwarding needs to be enabled there too?

Regarding static IP, both client and server are broadband based so we will have static IP's anyway so does this apply? The manual doesn't mention anything about static IP's.

Sorry, I don't know a great deal about networking smile

It's not a password problem, we ran the server without one.

Thanks for the help. smile

No there is no grantee that any broadband connection has a static ip (Most isp's don't give you one unless you ask) you are right about the port forwarding thought if the firewall is off it SHOULD not need to be used.

Ive not played rfactor so im not sure if there are any specific issues with it.

Oohhh I've just had a thought. If it's just the two of you playing it may be worth a go at using a program called hamachi. You install it and can create a virtual LAN between you and your mates pc. You both need to install it and whoever hosts the LAN needs to know there ip address. But it might be worth a go if nothing else works

No worries, what was the problem in the end?

There were multiple PC's on the server's router and the wrong IP was set so the server wasn't getting the data.

Sounds like the router on the server side was setup wrong.

The matchmaker is pretty unreliable anyway which makes fixing connection problems in rfactor even more confusing.

IIRC, the server was one of two PC's connected to the router, we were using the wrong IP address and were therefore talking to the wrong machine.

OK, I use a Netgear wireless model, and have two laptops attached. What steps (in basic terms) would I need to take to get it to work. I'm desperate for help. PLEEEASSEE.

Many thanks.

I will speak to the guy who fixed it and ask him if he can post a reply.

Many thanks. I have been through the static ip process and configured eveything. When I check my ports, tcp 34447 is open, but UDP 34297 and 34397 are not??? But I have the same rules set up for them all (ie allow). I'm guessing this is why I am getting the 'Join Timed Out' message.

Thanks for your help. Would love to get this sorted.

If you are still having problems, have a look at this forum thread.

I'm sorry I don't have a lot to do with networking, try posting the specific networking issue in the 'Computers' section of this forum, I'm sure someone will be able to help you.
