How would you lay out this room?
Discussion
So... new house, new family room/lounge/living room/day room - depending on how posh you are. How would you lay it out? We've got two young kids, so it's got to be family friendly. We need at least a three seater sofa - something you can really relax in, nothing formal. We'll probably get a flat screen for the room, and hide all the video equipment in another room with a radio remote to keep things neat. The house is fairly cottagey in style on the outside, but will be contemporary and uncluttered inside.
The room is 5.8m long, by 3.9m wide (drawing is slightly out of date, showing 4.2m wide). That's 20ft by 12'9" in old money. The inglenook will have a fairly contemporary tall wood burner in it. 'Up' in the picture is north, the garden is through the french doors to the West.

So - what would you do with it?

Seriously, not sure about the telly - be nice to have the fire as the focal point of the room, big telly is going to disturb that. Would be tempted to have a sofa at the bottom on the left facing the stove and have the tv on the wall above? chair over on rh side?

Well, this is PistonHeads!

Yes that would appear just about spot on. I like what you've done there with the TV. Nice and discreet!

Well if it were me:
TV in the corner - breaks all the rules however
Sofa angled opposite TV so the best you can get
Speakers around the corners of the TV / Sofa square...
Failing that - yes TV in front of the window - or electric projection screen....

Yep like it - although instead of an angled sofa how about a modular corner one and big footstool?ipwn said:
Turn it into a home cinema tbh. Everyone can enjoy it
Home cinema goes somewhere else.

Yes, separate place to eat, and somewhere for the kids to play (if they don't mind the home cinema!).captainzep said:

Worst "oooh I've got a big new house!" thread ever...
By the way, how big is it all as you dont have measurements on there!!
No, I don't have a big new house - I'm living in a caravan which leaks when it rains and is cold when it's.. um.. cold. What you see there is the plans for the building that will eventually replace the caravan. As this Christmas is going to be cold and wet (again) I'm distracting myself by imagining what it'll be like to live somewhere warm for a change.By the way, how big is it all as you dont have measurements on there!!

Anyway, I did mention in the text - 20ft by 12ft 9 ish.
