They're going to use it as a passenger train on proper lines? Or have I misunderstood it?

That is how I read it, suspect not for usual commuter services mind you

I suspect it will be held back for "special occasions", such as charter trips etc

The last day of main line steam working on BR was August 11th, 1968...........

We have this at the bottom of our street.

They run a regular service in summer. I could use it to get to work...

It has already started it's trials for main line working. If all goes well (and it certainly seems to have so far) then it will be rated up to 90mph. The intention is to work it most days during the holiday season and weekends etc. Being modern, it should be far more reliable than the usual elderly steam (and diesel I suppose) locos, and so more plans can be made for it. Most of it was made with modern production techniques (laser cutting, cnc etc) and the boiler is proving to be considerably more efficient than the original locos. So much so that when they were testing the boiler, they nearly ran out of water for it and had to call the fire brigade to top it up.

Can't wait to see it, it's coming to Barrow Hill (Chesterfield), just down the road from me, in April.

Looks good thumbup

We've got the Jacobite Steam Train on the west coast of Scotland. Keep meaning to find out times and go camp out with the camera at the Glenfinnan viaduct.

Without wishing to sound like too much of a dork, is that the Harry Potter train?

Actually it's an A4 Pacific - there's no such thing as a Mallard Class. Mallard was just another A4.
