London with the kids by train

right then, i'm off to london with the family tomorrow including my 2 kids aged 4 and 2.

We're going by train from didcot to paddington, then onwards on the tube to South kensington (can you guess where we're going) for mid morning.

The question is, what is the normal procedure for kids to get through the underground barriers as I guess they won't have tickets? so do I just hoist them over the barriers? Don't really want to piss off some over zealous underground staff if i can help it


I know its a bit of a gay question, but I haven't been to London for ages.

Any advice to help with travel would be appreciated.

Most of the main tube stations have a guard in a box at the turnstyles & they'll let you through the gated bit.

There are manned gates for the disabled and those with luggage/monkeys. Just walk up to them and show your ticket.

I don't have kids, but I believe you need tickets for the kids on the underground.

Try all going together to the gate next to the barriers meant for pushchairs and luggage, show your tickets and hopefully the LU staff on it will have enough sense to let you through.

Last time we went with my two ( New Year 2008, 2 and 5 year olds) the problem on the Tube wasn't the barriers but the distinct lack of feckin' lifts!
My biggest memory of that London trip was lumping a tired little boy in his pushchair up and down steep bloody step all day long.

Usually, you can use the disabled gate at the side of the barriers to get through. Just show your ticket to the Guard and they'll let you all through.
Other than that, no problems.

worth checking http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/livetravelnews/realtime/... to make sure no closures, seems they do engineering at weekends..

Prepare to get wet tomorrow as the tunnel from South Ken tube up to near the science museum regularly gets closed as it floods at every opportunity and the weather tomorrow is forecast to be very wet and pretty windy too.

Not so, up to 4 under 11s can go free with an accompanying adult.
