XBox 360 - Premium or Elite?

Been tasked with buying an XBox 360 for Christmas pressie.

MS Hardware has me a bit confused though, can someone please help me.

Are these only differences between the Premium and the Elite:

1. Case Colour - White v Black
2. HDD size - 60gb v 120gb
3. Elite box contains HDMI lead.

£60 or so seems a large price difference for 60gb of storage and a cable.

Or are there other differences?

It used to be different, but now the differences boil down to the ones you've listed though.

I feel that the HDMI for the Elite is a bit of a gimmick to be honest, the picture quality is pretty much indistinguishable from the Premium in my eyes!

That's the reason I bought an Elite!
If you're going to get a lot of games, the bigger HD is quite useful (as you can rip the games directly to the HD).

Forgive my ignorance, but can you use an HDD sold for an Elite (ie it's black), with a Premium.

I see you can buy 120gb HDD for Xbox on ebay quite cheaply.

Also, does the Premium actually have an HDMI socket, the MS site is confusing:

Premium - HD requires Component HD cable (included) or VGA cable (sold separately

Elite - HD requires Component HD cable or HDMI cable (both included)

Seems to imply to me that the Premium can't use an HDMI cable.

You can use the 120gb HDD on any xbox console, you need a cable to transfer any existing save games etc that you may want to keep from your old HDD.

Every new XBox made these days comes with a HDMI port, only difference with the elite is that you get the cable in the box.

Will be interested to know more about the HDMI cable also.

I bought a HD TV at the weekend, and have used the lead that came with my premium console, flicked the switch to HD and connected the leads as per the instructions.

Does this now mean it's running in full HD mode? I've changed my display settings to 1080i on the dashboard. Quality is immense, but not sure whether this is because my other tele was so crap!

Try switching to a VGA or HDMI cable, then you will see a proper difference. The picture both these cables provides is far beyond the standard in box cable.

Yes. All xbox models now have the HDMI port and the newer Falcon motherboard/chipset.

Hmmm, mine is over a year old so will have to check for the HDMI port tonight. Mind you, it did get repaired 3 months ago due to the infamous RROD, so they possibly added one on then?

Ok, so my Xbox doesn't have a HDMI port. Kinda brassed off now as i've forked out £600 for a HDTV and cannot use it to it's full effect! I'm the fool for not checking before hand!

Is there any way i can get the full HD gaming quality without buying a new Xbox? I've done a quick google and it throws up some conversion kits, but at ~£50, are these really going to give the same results as a HDMI cable?

Yeah thats what i'm using currently. The picture is stunning, but i didn't know if that was just because i've upgraded from a 26" CRT Monitor. I guess i was just expecting that little bit more?! Playing through COD4&5, GOW and TDU last night, i noticed that some of the images displayed are not as smooth as i would have expected from HD? I've set the display settings to both 720p and 1080i and cannot really tell the difference between the two.

TV is a Panasonic Viera TX32LXD85 by the way.

Guess i'm just expecting too much?

I too ran my xbox through the component lead for over a year then got RROD. Exchange xbox came with HDMI and then I realised what they mean mean by HD gaming. If you have a HD tv (think every gamer has one by now) you must have HDMI to get anything like HD gaming.

I had just the normal Red Yellow and White wires.. Until I got the HDMI cable I thought it was good quality.. Looking back it was terrible.

I got a HDMI cable from Game for a fiver IIRC and it's amazing.

Absolutely make sure it says 175 Watts on the box .. otherwise it will break

Sounds like you were using the composite cables which are only SD. Going to HD is a huge step up in quality.
