What the Hell is going on in this country

There's no reason why any of you will care about this but I had to vent my anger somewhere.

A year ago today my Mum got attacked whilst walking 100 metres from her house. She lives in a small provincial market town - nothing more than a big village - that on the face of it would seem to be the perfect place for a woman approachin retirement.

She had gone for a walk one evening when she saw a man who she felt looked a bit dodgy walking the other way on the opposite side of the road. She carried on walking, turned a corner onto a residential street and started walking home. At this point she heard footsteps quite a way behind her but sounding as if they were getting closer. She tried not to think anything of it and carried on until she was in sight of her house, when the footsteps moved to what she thought was right behind her. She stopped, turned round, and found herself face to face with a guy fully dressed in black and with a hood up and scarf over his mouth. With no warning he grabbed her and tried to drag her down the alleyway she was next to. Mum resisted and put up a fight and this guy then throws her onto the road, jumps ontop of her, tells her he has a knife, and starts punching her repeatedly, breaking her arm and bruising her all over pretty badly. He made no attempt through all of this to go for her bag which he could ahve taken easily, and the fact he tried to take her down an alley makes me think this was attempted sexual asault.

My Mum was in a terrible state as you can imagine but slowly got over it, to the point where on Saturday she managed to walk on her own to the local shops in the dark without feelign scared.

On Monday night she came home from work to find her house had been broken into. The french windows had been forced and the house had been ransacked. They took nothing other than her jewellery; worth nothing insurance wise but including her wedding and engagement rings from when she was with my Dad.

What the hell is this country coming to when a 55 year old woman who has spent her whole life working in the medical profession caring for people, doesnt feel safe in her house or walking on her own street.

I'm absolutely livid. If I could ever meet whoever was responsible for either of these disgusting acts I swear to God I would happily forefeit my own freedom to see proper justice done. I hope they both get their comeuppance in the most painful way possible.

Sorry for the long post and lack of expletives in my "rant" but I'm a bit numb about it all really. Seriously considering whether I want any of my family living in this country anymore.

Gutted for your mum mate, all I can say that wont make it at all better is that not everyone is like it although it probably seems like it now. Anyway all the best to your mum tell her to keep her chin up.

I think you'll find that this kind of thing has been happening since the dawn of time, and that in reality the streets are a very much safer place now than they ever were.

I don't doubt that for a second. My point was that whether the "figures" show the streets are safer now than they were 50 years ago or not, this is far too close to home for my liking.

When I found about about the attack last year I went straight round and talked to my Mum for a few hours, then when I left I just drove to where it happened under the illusion that somehow the guy would just appear and I'd be able to take my anger out on him. Of course in reality I'll never find out who either of these people are, and like you say, that's probably for the best.

Ahh yes but the latest massaged statistics crime figures reported crimes prove we are all safer. All that stuff about stabbings and teenagers killing each other is just imaginary.

This country is a dump for most of us.

Any society where two bottom feeders can slash someone across the face with a stanley knife in a totally unprovoked attack, get away with a community service order and a £250 is totally fked.

This happened to a friend of my dad's son, not 6 months ago in the west end of Glasgow.

The two who assaulted him didn't even bother to turn up for court the first time, IMO they should have got the jail.

I always wonder on stuff like this the element of insider knowledge that may be part of it.
Not the mugging I mean, the burglary.

As we fall on harder times, fewer enighbours will be looking out for each other and their posessions, and there will be a few more looking out for opportunities to fleece them.

Get the old dear some pepper spray and a good panic alarm for her bag, and get the house alarmed.

If you can get Marksheer to get out of his Big Woolies depression, you may even get a nice PH xmas discount for her.

Again be interested to know where she lives approx and dont worry I aint out to burgle her.!

re: Teenagers being stabbed. Unless you are a teenager I'd not worry too much about it.

But in general if we want to get crime down theres only one way to do it. Buy more police, and stick them on the streets. Zero tollerance. 5 or so years of that and wind it back a notch see what happens and be prepared to do it over and over again.

It's Buckinghamshire - about 5 miles from the Oxfordshire border. Close to Thame if you know that.

Agreed. The sooner we get some proper government who restore a sense of society and correctness to this country the better. I just hope it's not too late.
