Hi,
Had my S for 2 months now and I've notice the engines abit noisey and sadly not the good noisey. When i bought the car, i replaced the exhaust gaskets, used plenty of firegum and tighten the manifolds up. Used it for a few days and then retightened the manifolds as usual.
The past couple of weeks i've notice a kind of ticking, mechanical noise. I've never had a V6 before so is this usual, I know straight six engines are generally noisey and wondered whether this was the same. Oil levels okay, can't really determine the origin of the noise, it just seems to come from inside the block.
Am i being paranoid? And do the gaskets have a tendancy to go on these? I have been gunning ti abit but only from warm.
It's not a horrendous noise, I just happen to notice it, probably more so now I know its there.

Cheers Adrian

Straight six? What sort of TVR do you have? Its a V6 normally. Anyway, tick, tick, tick could be the tappets. Is it a cat or non cat version?

Tappets. TADTS.

Depending on your model, they might be hydaulic. Search the S forum for hydraulic tappets and there's a load of threads about how to tell if yours are hydraulic or not. As always there doesn't appear to be a hard and fast rule governing how to identify other than stripping everything down!

Yes, CAT models are Hydraulic and non cats are manual. Stripping it wont help as they both look the same from the top. Mine were manual (non-cat) and sorted in about an hour. No noise now, well apart from the usual roar.

Yeah could be tappets, aye. Also, I always find you get a little bit if extra mechanical noise from the water pump pulley area in these cold/damp conditions.......especially if the car's been left outside

Lets hope its not a big end, although I would guess that`s very rare on these engines. You can get a ticking noise from a leaky exhaust manifold gasket, although its easy to trace and identify.

Didn't someone come up with a chassis number after which all cars were hydraulic, Cat or not?

I'm running the V6, I meant as in i'm aware that the straight six engines tend to be quite noisey, sorry, didn't really phrase it properly.

Cheers guys, forgot to meant its an S1 but with the 2.9 in. Will check the tappets, its non-cat so probably a non-hydraulic.

Thanks again.

There was something to do with engine codes as per ford, but looking at mine none of the codes matched!!!

Now I may be way of the mark here but the ford V6 2.8 always used to go out of adjustment after a good thrash. This was because the adjusters on the top of the rockers were an interference fit but always slackened off. I don't know if the 2.9 was much different to the 2.8 but the ticking from the top end will be Valve clearance adjustment.

Maybe you're thinking about something different, but I seem to remember they were simple screw adjusters with a locking nut and not likely to slip as long as they're locked. Are yours different?

I can't remember what ford V6 it was of mine (2.3 cologne or 3.0 essex) but I remember one of them just having effectively a tight fitting bolt in the end of the tappet to adjust it - there was no locknut. What a cr@p arrangement.

My 2.9 Cologne has the locknut as suggested...
