never did them myself, sat common entrance which seemed far more sensible.

have seen the bbc website which shows some sample questions.

i'd like to think i am relatively intelligent - i have a maths degree with computer science.

however can someone tell me the how the following is worked? answers are given and i still can't see how it's worked out. perhaps it's only meant for lower intelligence people this exam...



Three of the four words are given in code. The codes are not written in the same order as the words and one code is missing.

8. TASTE

Answer: 52453 (T=5 A=2 S=4 T=5 E=3)

One of the words starts with a 5 and another ends with a 5, so 5 has to be a T as no other letter starts and finishes one of the words.

5326 must therefore be TEAM and its pretty easy from there.

I did sit it, and passed, in 1996/1997. Must admit that I don't remember questions like that. I suppose if you had a bit of time and paper you could go through all the possibilities looking at which words and numbers are repeated in each word. Does seem a bit harsh to expect from a 10-11 yr old.

It reminds me of the kind of question that would have been on that riddle site that has been discussed on here recently.

Two of the code numbers end in 5, only two of the words end in the same letter i.e. "T", so 5 = T.

That means that 5326 = TEAM, as that's the only word that starts with T. So 3 = E, 2=A and 6 = M.

There are two words with E as the second letter and so LEST must be 1345. So 1 = L and 4 = S.

Well, either Male or Mast is the missing word, as none of the two codes start identically (MA)

There are only two words finishing identically and two codes finishing identically - 4 & 5 being the S and T. So Male must be the missing word.

That leaves Team as the other code word. T = 5, E = 3, A = 2, M = 6.

From that, I spelt the two words.

I took and passed the 12+ (Buckinghamshire) and some of the questions were similar to that.

Only 2 words end in the same letter(T),you have 2 codes that end in the same no.(5) therefore T=5
There's only one letter which appears in pos. 2 and 3 (A) there's only one no. that appears in pos. 2 and 3 (2) A=2
There's only one letter that only occupies pos. 2and 4 (E) there's only one number (3) here so E=3

Ahh you bd. No, not you, the test. I could not work out that question, I kept reading the word LEST as the missing one. 13/15 for me. Thanks for the explanation though.

That really seems like something you'd more likely see on a GCSE paper. Actually, forget that, it's too tricky for GCSEs.

Did it and got 11 out of 15. Not bad really!! I just missed them which I think was a shame.

My 10 year old. Had to take the the exam six months early in september in Kent.

He got full marks, 145 (I think) in each exam. I guess its like doing crosswords. A way of thinking.

I got 14/15 only because I missed one the questions. =]

I can understand why you got stuck on that question though as it's not entirely clear at first - when I first read it, I assumed the right codes were under each word, just they were jumbled up! It wouldn't work - so I looked at the question again and it meant the codes aren't necessarily under the right words. Easy error to make!

Also got the highest mark when I did the original in 1981 - although it all went downhill from there
