i got stage 1 kit with hif38 carb.. and i got myself a smith rev 0-8k counter from ebay for £20.

And i wonder how can my mini engine rev to ? 5500rpm ?

how can you make it rev higher ? How do you know you can safetly push the engine to the highest part of rev?

The main problem with the mini engine in standard form is it's inability to breath in and out. You may have fitted a stage 1 kit but the main problem is the cylinder head itself. The easiest solution is to find an MG metro engine. They produce about 70-75 hp I think and have improved breathing allowing you to rev a bit more. Make sure you get the carb as well as it is larger.

You should be OK to rev a slightly improved 1275 'A'+ lump to 6500. However, you won't gain much at those revs unless you fit a better head to improve the breathing, as already stated, and a better cam to get max benefit from the head/carb combination.
They sound a bit harsh when revved, but don't usually blow up unless you use over 6700 rpm regularly.
Ask Dodgy Dave what my 1293 cc rally car sounds like at 7000!

If you look on my "is 998 great" post, I asked similar questions as I am keen to get a higher revving engine for my 1275 mini and didn't know where to start (I was considering a 998, Don't ask! ). Some people have given me some good advice on cam choice, so it might be worth you having a read.
