So whats one of these worth, a mates selling his, its less than a year old and has hardly been used. If i can get it cheap enough I might take it off his hands.
Offer him £150 with a smile
I bought a brand new 160gb a few months back. Came with 4 games as standard (GT5P, Rachett and Clank, Last Guy & Super Stardust). I also got 3 BlueRay movies thrown in (Transformers, Batman Begins & Close Encounters 30th Aniv) all for £315 from Gamestation.
So paying half that for a second hand 40gb seems right to me.

Have a look in the window of GAME/Gamestation they display their current trade in price's, they offer very little for cash, so this may help in securing a cheap price

It isn't so much the size of HD it is how much warranty it holds.
I managed to sell a new unused 80 gig PS3 with a years warranty for just under £300. But I wouldn't pay £150 for one without warranty.
At that money I think I'd be buying an xbox till PS3 prices drop.
I disagree. Second hand prices of PS3's are very firmly related to the HD size. Second hand 40gb consoles are cheaper than 80gb etc. The only exception to this rule are the original 60gb. Yes the sensible thing to look at is the warrenty, but the actual prices are HD linked, not warrenty linked.I managed to sell a new unused 80 gig PS3 with a years warranty for just under £300. But I wouldn't pay £150 for one without warranty.

Look in all the shops selling second hand (the best place to see prices) and all of them are HD size dependant.

I wouldn't go anywhere above £150. If you think you can get a new 80gb with a bluray and a few games for about £300, then the console itself must be knocking around the £200 mark.
And that's brand new with an extra 40gb.
erm... a brand new 80gb with no games is actually still knocking around the £280 point. Gamestation seem to be one of the cheapest and this is their new offers page...And that's brand new with an extra 40gb.

Seems the 160gb is no longer available in most places.
I still say offer no more than £150

wouldn't go any more than £150
It is a mobile phone offer one that he hasnt had long and never used, It comes with deadspace, I said £150 and he said yes, so I might get back to him on it. I'd quite like it for when GT5 eventually comes outwouldn't go any more than £150

I thought the backwards compatible systems (was it the 60? ) were worth a lot more?

Very good of you to post a link with 80gb models with 3 games for £300. Sort of reinforces the point you were disagreeing with.
Otherwise we all seem to be in agreement not to shell out over £150.
Well in the end I decided against taking it at all, it had no bids on ebay untill 5 mins to go, at which point it went from £140 up to £235. SO by everyone here's reckoning its gone for £85 over what it should. Bet my mates pleased I turned him down. Could have bought it and readvertised and made a nice profit

The only thing I disagreed with was your estimate at the console only price. You can't get a new 80gb console for £200.
The rest of your post I agreed with and posted links showing the multi deals to prove the/your point. Maybe next time you will realise that when someone posts something that agrees with your point than maybe, just maybe, they are agreeing with you.
